Carteret County already has received approvals (CAMA Permit No.
35-20, DWR Project No. 2019-1718) to excavate approximately
35,000 cubic yards of material from East Taylors Creek, along the
Town of Beaufort waterfront. The originally permitted disposal site
was at the adjacent Atlantic Veneer property. The County now would
like to explore the concept of a beneficial use project that would place
the spoil materials from the already approved dredging project along
a stretch of estuarine beach on the east side of Radio Island.
Placement in this location would be beneficial in two ways:
1) The placement of the material will help to restore a heavily used
estuarine beach that has experienced severe erosion in recent years,
and
2) Protect a portion of roadway that has been damaged by shoreline
erosion. This road provides for public access to the southern and
eastern portions of Radio Island. The road is also utilized as the only
access road to a military loading and unloading facility at the
southern tip of Radio Island.
Please also note that an agency scoping meeting was held on this
modification proposal on June 22, 2021. Holley Snider of DWR was
present (vis web call). Minutes will be submitted to all participants
shortly.
