Through this letter, the undersigned are requesting a permit to perform
maintenance dredging of the boat basin behind 2033, 2102 and 2107 Middle Sound Loop
Road. The area to be dredged involves land owned by several parties, each of which has
signed below. The adjacent riparian land owners have been notified as required, via the
attached forms. The attached sketch shows the areas to be dredged, the approximate
channel depths, the approximate location of property lines, and the property owner's
names.
In general,the project will involve removing silt and sand that have washed in over
the years. The existing high tide shoreline will not be changed. No vegetation will be
removed for this project, nor will any marsh grass be disturbed. The channel will retain a
bottom profile such that the depth increases or remains constant towards the channel
mouth at the ICW. Soundings at mid-channel verify this profile generally already exists.
Dredging will be performed with a barge mounted excavator,placing the material on the
barge for de-watering, and then off-loaded to a truck on Coastal Carolina Yacht Yard
property(2107 Middle Sound Loop). The material will then be trucked to the high
ground area of lots 6 and 7 of Ocean View(Joseph Johnson property). Silt fence will be
placed around the material to prevent rain from washing it back into the basin.
Precautions will be taken to prevent leaking of the spoil from the truck while in transit.
The dredging project involves four areas:
A) The north end of the basin behind 2033 Middle Sound Loop Rd: Material washed
into this area from land clearing operations on Ocean View lots 6, 7, 8 and 9 early in
1999. Material also accumulated over the years prior, although more gradually. This area
will be dredged to a maximum of 4 feet at mean low water. The existing high water
shoreline will not be altered. Banks will sloped to minimize erosion. This basin was
dredged previously under permit 27-86 during the 1980's. Estimated volume is 200 cu
yd.
B) The bottom of the basin behind 2033 will be restored to a maximum of 4 feet at
mean low water, from a depth of about 3 feet now. The area is about 60 feet by 100 feet,
at a depth increase of 1 foot results in 6000 cu ft, or 222 cu yd.
C) Material will be removed from around the floating docks at 2102 Middle Sound
Loop. This area is about 25 feet by 30 feet, increased in depth an average of three feet,
resulting in 2250 cu ft, or 83 cu yd.
D) Material will be removed from around the piers and floating docks of Coastal
Carolina Yacht Yard. Estimating 25 slips, each an area of 10 feet by 15 feet with 2 feet of
