The Figure Eight Island Homeowners Association requested placing these power lines under the Intracoastal Waterway. The overhead power lines along the causeway will also be placed underground during construction. The installation will involve boring under the Intracoastal Waterway from the causeway on Figure Eight Island to the mainland west of the waterway. The remaining section on the causeway to Figure Eight Island will be installed by trenching with a backhoe. The pole structures on both sides of the waterway and along the causeway will then be removed. Work Steps: • Directional boring equipment will be set up near the maintenance building under the bridge on the causeway on Figure Eight Island. An 8 inch directional bore will be created from this location for a distance of approximately 900 feet and 10 feet beneath the Intracoastal Waterway. The boring operation will utilize a Bentonite solution to lubricate and stabilize the drill hole. All Bentonite will be contained and the excess solution will be removed. • Three 6" and one 2" HDPE casing will be pulled back from the mainland end of the bore to Figure Eight Island using a reamer to enlarge the borehole. This pullback operation will expel the remainder of the Bentonite onto the ground in the sand/gravel driveway at the maintenance building on the causeway. The Bentonite at this location will be recovered upon completion of the project. • A backhoe will dig a two foot wide, 36" deep trench, for the 1800 foot route from bore termination on the causeway to the termination of the existing overhead lines on Figure Eight Island. A backhoe will also dig a 2 foot wide, 36" trench for the 290 foot route from bore termination on the mainland to a point near the guard house. • Three 6" and one 2"PVC conduit will be installed in trench. The trench will be covered and the grade will be restored to the grade that existed prior to the trenching operation. • Two electrical circuits will be installed in the conduits. • Estimated disturbed vegetation area to be 2090 feet by 10 feet. Appropriate sedimentation and erosion control devices (silt fence)will be implemented to ensure that eroded materials do not enter adjacent wetlands, watercourses and property. • The existing overhead electric circuit will then be removed from across the Intracoastal Waterway and on the causeway at Figure Eight Island. • All work on the project will be completed by November 1, 2001.
