Smith Creek, King Street
Electrical Power Line
Replacement Project
Project Description:
The existing overhead electrical power line crossing Smith Creek from the north
end of King Street, Wilmington, needs to be removed and placed underground
due to the NC Department of Transportation, Smith Creek Parkway project.
Horizontal directional drilling technology will be utilized. A hole will be drilled
under Smith Creek from high-ground to high-ground and conduits for the power
lines will be installed. Pole structures on both sides of the creek will then be
removed.
Work Steps:
• Directional drilling equipment will be set up in the existing Right-of-Way
(ROW) on the northside of Smith Creek. A 6 inch directional bore will be
created from this location for a distance of approximately 1350 feet and 20
feet beneath Smith Creek. The bore will exit on the southside of Smith Creek,
approximately 300' from the creek.
• The boring operation will utilize a bentonite solution to lubricate and stabilize
the drill hole. All bentonite will be contained and the excess solution will be
removed.
• A 6" HDPE casing will be pulled back from.the north end of the bore back to
the south side. This pullback operation will expel the remainder of the
bentonite into a collection pit. The bentonite at this location will be recovered
upon completion of the project.
• Two electrical circuits will be installed in the conduits.
• Appropriate sedimentation and erosion control devices (silt fence) will be
implemented to ensure that eroded materials do not enter adjacent wetlands,
watercourses and property.
• The existing overhead electric circuit will then be removed from across Smith
Creek.

Smith Creek, King Street
Electrical Power Line
Replacement Project
Project Description:
The existing overhead electrical power line crossing Smith Creek from the north
end of King Street, Wilmington, needs to be removed and placed underground
due to the NC Department of Transportation, Smith Creek Parkway project.
Horizontal directional drilling technology will be utilized. A hole will be drilled
under Smith Creek from high-ground to high-ground and conduits for the power
lines will be installed. Pole structures on both sides of the creek will then be
removed.
Work Steps:
• Directional drilling equipment will be set up in the existing Right-of-Way
(ROW) on the northside of Smith Creek. A 6 inch directional bore will be
created from this location for a distance of approximately 1350 feet and 20
feet beneath Smith Creek. The bore will exit on the southside of Smith Creek,
approximately 300' from the creek.
• The boring operation will utilize a bentonite solution to lubricate and stabilize
the drill hole. All bentonite will be contained and the excess solution will be
removed.
• A 6" HDPE casing will be pulled back from the north end of the bore back to
the south side. This pullback operation will expel the remainder of the
bentonite into a collection pit. The bentonite at this location will be recovered
upon completion of the project.
• Two electrical circuits will be installed in the conduits.
• Appropriate sedimentation and erosion control devices (silt fence) will be
implemented to ensure that eroded materials do not enter adjacent wetlands,
watercourses and property.
• The existing overhead electric circuit will then be removed from across Smith
Creek.
