RE: Well 5 discharge maintenance
Attached is an image of the Well 5 area located at 435 Causeway Dr. The well is
located outside the 75' CAMA zone. We have begun repairs to the well and replacement
of the well house. The original well had an overboard discharge line that was tied
directly into the well piping. This design presented an avenue for cross-connection. As
part of the reconstruction,that cross-connection has been eliminated in favor of an air-
gap design. The original pipe is 4"and runs from the well house to the marsh for
discharge. In order to use an air-gap,the discharge piping must be larger that 4". We are
proposing to replace the existing 4"pipe with 10"pipe. The well discharge will then
flow into a box with a grate on top of it and then out through the new 10"pipe. The
discharge will be routed to the same area. This is an additional step in improving the
safety and security of our water supply. The basin that the well will discharge into will
be installed above grade (approximately 3-4"), so there is no possibility of it being
utilized as a"storm drain". We need to do this work under a maintenance &repair
authorization from you.

I have reviewed the proposed maintenance and changes to the well head
configuration at Well # 5 at Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County. There is
nothing in the proposed activity that would require a permit from the Division of
Water Quality. Thanks for consulting with us.
