Application Request to Reissue CAMA General Permit
For Maintenance of Existing Boat Channel
CAMA Dredge & Fill General Permit No. 41568 was issued on May 26, 2005 and the
maintenance work had not commenced by the time that the permit expired on August 26,
2005. Therefore,the following description of the maintenance work is in support of the
permit request, which is in keeping with the earlier proposed work with the exception of
adding a second spoil site and cleaning out the channel width to between 20' and 25'.
The canal described herein adjoins Crystal Cove Subdivision of Chadwick Acres
(Singleton Street) on the east and Chadwick Acres II (Waterway Drive) on the west. The
location is in'Stump Sound Township, Onslow County, North Carolina.
• It is proposed to clean out a portion of the existing canal entrance using
mechanical machinery, inward from the ICW side of sand bar(about 35' in front
of Lot 2)to a point where deep water exists i.e. 4-foot low water depth in the
vicinity of Lot 5 located on Waterway Drive in Chadwick Acres II.
• To maintain the 4-foot water depth at a channel width of 25', about 2 1/8' of fill
will be removed from the current average depth of 1 7/8' at low water. The width
of channel is reduced to 20'opposite the grass area, a distance of 50' - 75'. The
linear distance that the channel will be cleaned out is approximately 505' as
described in the above paragraph. The amount of material to be removed is 980
cubic yards. As a matter of information, the original cleanout permit number 6-86
issued to Marlow F. Bostic allowed the existing channel to be cleaned out to -4.00'
below MLW, which is the same depth as the current request.
• Two spoil sites are requested. The primary site will be on Lot 2 (Chadwick Acres
II—Waterway Drive). Lot 2 is approximately 90'x300', owned by Donald and
Kathy Schwahn. About 70% of the material will be placed on this site. The
secondary spoil site is located near the upper end of the cleanout distance on Lot 6
(Chadwick Acres— Singleton Street)owned by Eugene and Joann Lotterhos. If all
of the material can be placed on the primary site, then the possibility exist that this
site may not be needed. The necessary soil fence will be in place prior to the
cleanout operation. The material(spoil pile) will be no closer than 30' from the
earthen bank or the sea wall adjacent to the canal.
• Water depth soundings were taken from a boat on August 28, 2005. The actual
water soundings were corrected to low water or MLW in order to determine the
depth of cut. Refer to attached drawing for details.
