Dear Mr. Mairs
This letter will confirm an earlier discussion regarding our request to perform
some dune restoration at the Ocean Dunes Complex. Hurricane Ophelia caused
some erosion to our frontal dune in the southern end of the facility, an area not
included in the Corps of Engineers Beach Renourishment Program for the Town
of Kure Beach. The enclosed map highlights the area, about six hundred linear
feet, beginning at the end of the Corps Renourishment Project.
Our plan is to work at low tide to remove surface sand to a depth of up to twelve
inches and rebuild the frontal dunes that have been eroded. A "bobcat' would be
used intermitently over a period of weeks to allow the tide changes to restore the
removed sand. Care would be used so as not to damage the fragile coquina
outcrop. This sand "scraping" program has been used in the past and has been
effective in providing short term protection from major storms. After the
completion of dune restoration, it is planned to replant American Beach Grass
and/or Sea Oats and replace sand fencing to stabilize the dune.
As requested, we enclose pictures of the damaged area. It is planned to begin
the work in late March with completion in April well before the turtle nesting
season begins May first.
