Re: Repair Exemption Request: Bald Head Island Marina South Jetty Pier End/Jetty Walk: CAMA 172-87
Dear Ms. Coats:
Included are 5 color copies of an 241106" color drawing Cl seal dated 4-21-11 in support of this
Repair Exemption Request for the Bald Head 'island Limited, LLC CAMA Permit 172-87, Marina
Development. 4
Late last Wednesday evening, April 20, an incoming sailboat got one of her lines caught on one of the
channel entrance guide piles, and its bow was swung into the end of the wood jetty pier with sufficient
momentum to damage the pier end. For safety, we have had to cordon about 40' pier end off. See the
pictureson the drawing. My initial structural evaluation, without the benefit of removing planks, is
that there is damage to the girders, stringers and rails to 36' back from the pier end. I have asked for
40' of repair to allow a proper tie in to undamaged structure. A cross section of the jetty detail is
included on the drawing, with the notation for the contractor to match the actual as -built conditions.
The transverse girders are appx 4' on center, for a total of S 1+/- girders along the full length (200'+/-
of the on pier "jetty walk'. A few of these girder attachments to the concrete pier cap are in need of
below deck repairs outside of the 40' end area. Please include this miscellaneous repair work in our
repair exemption. 1 believe the contractor estimate is for an additional 7 girders. Note that we would
like to get the pier end, often used for fishing, repaired in plenty of time for the Memorial Day
Weekend.
In addition to the pier end repair, we would like to take this opportunity to repair/replace.
approximately 40 of the over 500 on grade or on jetty deck planks, which are either 2x4 or 2x6
Pressure Treated Southern Pine. The on grade Jetty Walk walkway (appx 220 If) was. approved in
2004, and BHI Construction Records indicate it was built in 2005. There is severe checking/cracking
on some planks, as well as some popped board ends.
If you have any questions, please call me at 910-228-2484. When the permit is completed, please have
copies faxed to 910-457-7463 & 457-7220 or emailed to me and to Jim Henry. Thanks for your
attention to this matter.
