Moseley, resident for nearly 8 years at 126 Big Hammock Point Rd. in Sneads Ferry, NC do hereby object to the application for Rishel's CAMA permit at 124 Big Hammock Point Rd. for the following, but not limited to the following reasons: 1) From the Coastal Federation http://www.nccoast.org/uploads/documentstfactsheets/FS LivShorlines.pdf Vertical walls and riprap revetments do not absorb wave energy like sloping vegetation. Instead, the energy is reflected back along the shoreline, which can increase the erosion in these areas and scour marshes that naturally grow here. Bulkheads replace the broad, diverse tidal area with a vertical surface, greatly reducing the potential habitat for numerous estuarine animals that rely on these fringes to survive." 2) From the One NC Naturally (NC DENR) http://www.onencnaturally.com/pages/CHPP_Shoreline Hardening.htm Shoreline Hardening Habitats Affected: Water column, SAV, wetlands, soft bottom Common Sources: Bulkheads, jetties, seawalls, groins Impacts: Increased wave energy on shoreline due to hardened structures accelerates erosion of wetlands and leads to loss of intertidal soft bottom habitat. Increased turbidity in the water column. Deepening of nearshore habitat and elevated turbidity due to hardened structures deters fidure colonization of wetland or SAV plants. Reduced fish and invertebrate use of hardened shore due to decrease in habitat complexity and toxicity of wood preservatives. Prevents landward migration of wetlands (along estuarine shorelines) or barrier islands (along oceanfront). I do not want my property or the ecosystem around my property to become adversely affected from Mr. Rishel's intentions. I really am not certain that Rishel has the capacity to do the "greater good" for the environment, as I have witnessed him on a tractor with brush hog bogged down and effectively stuck less than 5' from the water while cutting marsh grass. And hauling in loads of dirt and spreading it with a box blade to reduce water retention and disallow the natural vegetation to flourish was another venture I personally witnessed.
