Dear Ms. MacPherson,
413 Granville Road
Chapel Hill NC 27514
April 15, 2015
I enclose our proposed plans for extending the accessway at our house at 321 Caswell Beach Roal
Caswell Beach, NC 28465, for which we seek your approval of an exception. We are as a family
deciding between Plan A and Plan B. We seek approval for both.
Figure 1 shows the proposed alterations in the second dune, taking up to 1'-6" from the top.
Figure 2 shows the plank level of the proposed structure for Plan A, with all but posts, final steps,
junction with existing walk at start staying >_6" above sand. In green it shows Plan B, which goes
straight across the gully rather than following the contours,
Figure shows a transverse elevation of the structure.
Figure 4 shows a side elevation of a typical 10' section.
Figure 5 shows a plan view and a section sketch of the proposed platform.
Our design considerations are as follows:
1. We have vital interest in preserving the dune structure, which is the hurricane protection fc
our house (much of which our family built with our own hands, starting in 1972).
2. We would love to hug the dunes as much as possible, for esthetics. But whether Plan A will
too hard for walking is the decision we need to make.
3. No steps except at beach end, since those of us in our 80's now find those hard.
4. Maximum slope 1' in 8'. We did experiments, and that's about what we can manage.
Our clan (including all 9 grandchildren) is gathering on June 8 for a walk -building week, so we ar(
eager to get our plans approved.
Email is usually the easiest way to reach me, but if modifications need to be made, I give my cell p
above.
