Dear Mr. McGuire:
On behalf of the Town of Ocean Isle Beach, Land Management Group is submitting a CAMA General
Permit application for the Ocean Isle Beach 12" AIWW Subaqueous Water Line project. The Town
plans to install a 12" waterline under the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and its adjacent wetlands at
the NC 904 bridge crossing. The existing water lines are attached to the bridge and are difficult to
maintain. Therefore, these lines will be removed and replaced with the new 12" water line. The
project will include 2,350 LF of fusible 12" C-900 PVC waterline installed by directional drill under the
waterway and its adjacent wetlands, 220 LF of 12" pressure class 350 ductile iron waterline installed
by open trench in uplands, and four locations where existing waterlines will be abandoned related to
NCDOT removal of the existing waterlines that currently hang from the bridge structure over the
waterway. The line will be located within the NCDOT Right -of -Way and the Town will obtain an
encroachment agreement from the NC DOT prior to initiating the work.
This application requests CAMA General Permit 0.1600 to authorize the installation of the new water
line underneath this Area of Environmental Concern via directional drilling. The entry and exit points
for the directional drill would be located in uplands and would not impact the wetlands on either side
of the AIWW. The pipe would be located a minimum of 52' below the bridge fender pile system (see
cross section).
