Erosion control and Living shoreline plans for: 158 Chantilly Rd, Camden N.C. 27921
After thoroughly researching the most cost effective and longest lasting erosion control methods, we
have come up with a plan that utilizes the materials that are already in place, while protecting our
property and creating wildlife habitat. Our plan will create an environment that is both visually
attractive and sustainable with very little maintenance.
The bulkhead on the sides of our property is still in fair shape and is repairable. With permission from
CAMA for a maintenance permit, we have already begun the process of repairing the bulkhead on the
sides of our property and cleaned up years of debris that have washed up on our boat ramp to make the
canal and ramp useable. Currently the canal is about 18'-24" deep during normal water levels. However
at low water level, (when the wind blows the water out) the canal is still not useable and our boat sits
directly on the bottom. With permission from CAMA we will be requesting to dredge the canal so that it
will be able to be used during the low water level days as well. We anticipate that we will have to
remove about 10" of settled leaves and debris to reach the original depth of the canal.
With regards to the area of our property that faces the river (we refer to this as the "front"): We have
decided that the best way to utilize what has already been built by man, and what mother nature has
created, would be to create what is referred to as a "living shoreline". With permission from CAMA we
would like to pile up a mixture of recycled concrete and oyster shells (referred to as "rip rap") on both
sides of the existing bulkhead. The existing bulkhead on river facing side of the property has been
damaged pretty severely by a combination of storms and years of neglect. By piling up rip rap on either
side of the failing bulkhead we hope to create a "speed bump" for waves during the high water windy
conditions that we frequently encounter. This will create a barrier which will allow seagrass and other
native plants to take root and protect our shoreline. This will also create tide pools in which small
baitfish can flourish. These areas will attract not only small fish, but also the wildlife that feeds on the
small fish, and plant species that flourish in these areas.
Finally, we will be requesting permission to build a small inland retaining wall as a border between our
lawn and the living shoreline. This wall will be constructed of wood and will not be in contact with the
,V water under normal water conditions. However when Hurricanes and other strong wind events threaten
our property, this retaining wall should help us to preserve the lawn that is currently in place. The
`` c retaining wall will follow the existing grass line (give or take 12") and will likely need to be only 24" deep
in the soil, with the top 6" visible. Because of the wave break created by the rip rap, and the seagrass
and other vegetation, we anticipate the soil to build up against this wall, rather than erode away from it.
We are loving our new life at the water's edge and welcome any tips and recommendations as we begin
this process. Thank you for your time and consideration in reviewing our plans.
