Box 501 • Wrightsville Beach, N.C. 28480 • (919) 256-3976 The preparation of this survey was financed in part through a grant provided by the North Carolina Coastal Management Program, through funds provided by the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, which is administered by the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 0 a 0 0 0 0 0 I u D Page 1 D INTRODUCTION D This survey gives a picture of how five hundred eighteen (518) randomly selected Wilmington registered voters feel about their city's problems, the desirability of Wilmington and their neighborhoods as a place to live, and their views on signage, landscaping, and the Historic Districts. Their opinions a are those held during the week of August-3 — 10, 1987, and the survey has an error margin of 4.5% Q Each question is presented in the order in which it occurred in the survey instrument. The report gives three ways in which to read the responses. First is a table containing the frequencies (the number of times a certain response was mentioned,) the percent that frequency was of the total surveys, a valid percent column which discounts those questionnaires which had no response to that particular question, and a cumulative percent column. The valid percent column is the column to which the most attention should be paid for interpretive Dpurposes. The second item given for each question is a graph which shows the frequencies in a representative manner. The third is a written paragraph which displays the data in paragraph form. No attempt has been made to interpret the data other than to explain the categories of responses in the open ended questions. IN I 0 D Independent Opinion Research & Communications, Inc. D P.O. The selection was based on voter lists married to telephone numbers, and calls were made in proportion to the number registered to vote in each Wilmington precinct. Field Work Five hundred and eighteen (518) interviews were conducted from August 2 through August 9, using a telephone bank at IOR&C's office. No calls were made on Friday or Saturday. The field work was completed by IOR&C who was responsible for the completion and verification of all interviews. A breakdown by precinct of the completed interviews follows: Precinct Registered voters (3/87) 1 Dorothy Johnson School 1120 2 Community Arts Center 2022 3 Hooper School 1079 4 Lucille Shuffler Bldg. 1516 a 5 Cape Fear Presbyterian 2015 6 New Hanover High School 892 a 7 8 Williston School Lake Forest Inc. 1188 1139 9 Annie Snipes School 1955 10 Church of God Castle St. 1009 a 11 Empie Park Fire Station 1845 12 Forest Hills School 1750 13 Winter Park Presbyterian 1717 (- 14 Roland Grise School 1102 U 15 Wm, Blount School 1498 16 Pine Valley School 2052 Q18 17 American Legion Bldg Fire Station/Golf Course 1249 1515 26,663 Interviews 20 40 19 30 38 27 22 24 38 22 35 34 32 18 24 37 28 30 518 ( Screens u All of the respondents were asked: "First, are you a registered voter?" Needs more cultural things to do, more restaurants Environmentally it is super; has a way to go culturally. Difficult to keep up with growth Near the beaches, climate is good; too many people Good for the retired, but not desirable for young people Location near beach Still small enough, and it does have the beach and cultural things, but it's isolated. Unemployment: If you don't know anybody, you can't get a job. Condemned houses are a nuisance Q Could be cleaned up more I've been here 15 years. Wilmington is a growing town with a mixture of people, enough culture, and recreation Lots of amenities Not really, it's too hot Attractive community, mix of people, lack of low income housing I don't like the humidity, but it's a small town with large town attributes. I like it in comparison with other places Roads are bad; beaches, outdoor life are good Need more business Salaries should be better My cemetery plot is here Changing too fast No high crime Water & sewer problems, real estate is too high, overgrowth Location; close to beach Close to things I enjoy Retired people, very desirable; younger people, less desirable ... no jobs Shopping center is convenient Housing rj Industry, good economy Control burning pollution Ideal except in the summer Culturally, a wasteland... theater art is not enough Never lived anywhere else The average person is very lackadaisical about education Trashy place to live Not too congested, not much crime, good health facilities, clean air Economic opportunities are very bad, but likes the slow pace A lot of drugs and crime Lousy roads, city trying to annex the county Lack of diversity; entertainment & schools less segregated Some things are still needed; civic center is needed It's home: limited culturally, but good time on the water Bad experiences with unfriendly people You can make a good living if you want to Sporting events too stifled Not much to do, no places to go Not enough good paying job opportunities Because of climate & tourism.
