[External] Duke Marine Lab Docks
Heather,
Closer inspection reveals that we have suffered damage to our fixed pier and docks. Damage to the fixed
structure is such that suitability to moor and service the new Research Vessel we are building is in
question. This is in addition to the damage to our floating docks that I had previously described. I propose
that we:
(1) Demolish and rebuild the floating docks within the same footprint using either locally built floating
sections or heavy duty concrete sections supplied by Bellingham Marine.
(2) Demolish and rebuild our fixed concrete and wooden dock structure, also within the current footprint.

Also, if you are near the Lab and could stop by for a few minutes I would like to walk you through our plan for the fixed
dock and prep for the new boat.

Hi Heather,
Yes, we have significant damage to our floating docks. These docks are adjacent to and just
north of our boat ramp. They provide access to our boat lifts, serve as a swim dock and allow
small boat mooring. It would be our intent to repair/rebuild in the same footprint.
I can find no significant damage to our fixed docks (other than four sunk boats under the
docks).

Hello Mr. Wilson,
Did you have damage during Florence? There is an emergency 2500 general permit that was
enacted for storm damaged docks etc. Please let me know if this is so.
Thanks,
Heather

Hi Heather,
It appears that we need to demolish our current docks (fixed docks- not the floating docks) and
rebuild in advance of a new research vessel arriving in June of 2019. 1 left some drawings at
your office that might provide some insight as to what we are hoping to build back.
Would there be a time we might meet to discuss these plans? I'm happy to come to your
office. You are also welcome to stop by the Lab if you are in the vicinity and we can walk the
docks.
Thanks!
John Wilson
