5030 N The Town of Carolina Beach is in the process of updating their storm water system
Sate B in the northern part of Carolina Beach. The streets to be affected are Delaware,
4vtlmingt�;r:. c t.•:, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia Avenues. A CAMA exemption is requested to
910.523.5715 replace the current gravity out fall pipe on Maryland Avenue and extend it slightly
passed the existing bulkhead.
Existing Conditions
Currently the existing 117' of a 15' gravity feed storm water pipe is located at
Maryland Ave. The pipe runs along Maryland Avenue and then parallel to an existing
bulkhead for approximately 12', before it discharges water into a linear water feature
(Photo 1). The feature is two to three feet wide that runs approximately 85' along
the bulkhead before opening up to the existing channel. This feature contains
minimal water at lower tides and up to three feet at higher tides. Across the feature
and opposite of the bulkhead is saltwater marsh. Further inspection conducted at low
tide, showed an existing pipe on the bottom of the linear feature, that appears to
have broken off in the past (Photos 2 and 3). The end of the pipe is equipped with a
duck bill to prevent back flow from tidal influence (Photo 4). Scouring and widening
are seen where the pipe discharges.
Purpose/Need
With an update to the new storm water drainage system a new pipe will need to
replace the old pipe. Extending the new pipe will reduce scour along the currently
scouring bulkhead and decrease any future erosion to the salt marsh.
Proposed Improvement
An 18" pipe will replace the existing 15" pipe and extend an additional 88' to the
end of the bulk head. Anchors will be placed along the pipe in the water to maintain
pipe elevation. At the end of the pipe pilings will be installed to hold the pipe in place
and signage installed accordingly to notify others that there is a submerged pipe.
The end of the pipe will also be fitted with directional flow valve to prevent back flow
during high tide events.
