Terminal Gate A Piles, Bald Head Island, NC
Dear Ms. MacPherson,
Included are 5 color copies of 11"x17" drawing Cl seal dated 4-48-18 for the repair/alignment/re-
alignment/replacement of the 8 BHI Ferry Terminal Gate-A Dolphins (Pile Clusters). The mis-alignment is
currently affecting the two aluminum boarding ramp tongues. i.e. the ramp end do not line up square
to the sides of the vessels. See exaggerated diagram on the drawing.
The 8 dolphins are comprised of 36 existing timber piles and one steel I-Beam. Numbers of piles in
each cluster is based on position and applied docking loads.
This is not necessarily a straightforward repair. if an existing pile snaps during relocation/replacement,
our dolphin locations relative to the bollard/cleat locations on the ferries may no longer be optimized.
Possibly a cascading effect.
Rather than pulling and resetting the existing piles, or replacing them new (36 timber piles total), it may
most economical to add additional piles to the existing dolphins. Dolphin D, with 8 timber piles and
the one steel I-beam is the critical dolphin. See commentary on my drawing Cl.
