Some local codes will require footings instead of concrete. filled postholes. hildren seldom need help to spark their imaginations —but when they do, this playhouse comes packed with versatility. The lower room turns into a puppet theater or a grocery store. The second floor becomes a stage, the deck of a ship, or the terrace of a mansion overlooking the sea. There's a firehouse pole for a quick getaway and a sandbox to make the landing soft. Although the playhouse construction may look somewhat complicated, it actually goes together rather simply —one step at a time. Your posts should be pressure -treated (rated for ground contact) or a naturally resistant species, such as redwood, cypress, or cedar. The five posts that form the downstairs room extend through the deck to support the second story guardrail. Two of the other posts extend to only the height of the deck and a third (at the ladder opening) is mounted to a joist below the deck surface. Easy -to -grow flowers include snapdragons, marigolds, nasturtiums, and zinnias. Remember vegetables, such as peas, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, or pumpkins and squash. Use the layout plan on page 68 and mark the centers of the postholes with batter boards and mason's lines (see page 10). Dig 4-foot postholes 12 to 18 inches wide; pour in 4 inches of gravel. Plumb and brace the posts and fill the holes with concrete. When it's cured, cut the posts — the short rear posts at 5 feet, 9 inches, and those that extend above the deck at 8 feet, N. inches. 2 HARD-WORK/NG SHEDS 67 SANDBOX This plan calls for a sandbox on the lower level below the firehouse pole. Make sure., the 2x8s around the perimeter of the' sandbox are pressure treated. Sink the boards so that the top edges are about 3 inches above the ground. Excavate the area inside the perimeter to a depth of at least 6 to 8 inches and fill it with good, clean sand, such as washed plaster sand from concrete or masonry supply outlets. 36" e 0 is Jer 68 HARD-WORKING SHEDS PLAYMATE: THE SHED WITH A DUTY TO HAVE FUN continued 3' 8W- 4x4 post—m Ladder for railing support 11 ,.,.,,...... .. „ , , . q,....
