Subject: Damage of the wastewater system serving the Pier House at the Iron Steamer
Resort, Pine Knoll Shores
Dear Messrs. Graham and McConkey:
On 09/23/99 a site visit was made to review the beach erosion damage on the septic
system at the above referenced facility.
We are now going to allow you to backfill the area as permitted by CAMA and cover up
the washed out drainfield. You need to cut the black corrugated pipe hanging out even
with the rock trench then backfill. This will leave a 47' line closest to the seawall, a 52'
line in the middle and a 55' closest to the pool. It is my "best professional judgement" that
with the septic system intact as it is and no more damage exist that this septic system be
recovered with approved sand and that the system should function as designed.
This approval shall be considered valad as long as there is no further washout from
erosion, the system does not malfunction, and there is no change of use to this wastewater
system.
If problems occur with this septic system, then the system will have to be relocated on -site
and meet todays repair standards and requirements.
The use for this wastewater system is a sixty (60) parking space pier based on ten (10)
gallons per day per parking space (600 gpd), a two (2) bedroom apartment (240 gpd) and
a food and drink stand based on 300 gpd. No fiurther addition of sewage flow will be
allowed on this wastewater system.

As of today's date (9/24/99) we will allow the pier to operate with temporary portable
toilets (with handwash facilities) for a period of sixty (60) days and retail only at the site.
No foodhandling will be allowed until the septic system has been covered back up and
this office has made a reinspection of the septic system.
If you have any further questions please contact this office at 728-8499.
