A large planting program by the State of Florida has shown that sea oats can be successfully planted in the fall rather than in winter or spring as has generally been the case here. Several million sea oats have been planted in the Florida Panhandle, which has a climate similar to southeastern North Carolipa. Planting has successfully taken place as late as November 15, so there is a chance to plant sea oats this fall if you want a quick start at covering any rebuilt dunes. The fast commercial sea oat grower in NC began distribution this year. The largest sea oat growers are located in Florida, several of which have collected North Carolina seeds and may have a limited supply of NC plants in stock. For large orders it takes about 90 days to go from seed to delivery from the nursery. Cost can range from $0.35 to $0.70 per plant. Planting information is available from this office or your local county extension office. Unlike sea oats, the planting of American beachgrass is still recommended during colder weather. A list of beachgrass growers is also attached. The dunes rebuilt and planted after Hurricanes Bertha, Fran and Bonnie were a mixed success in the recent storms. Many were breached and flattened. However, others remained partially in place and significantly reduced the amount of overwash sand burying roads and yards. Damage to enclosures under piling -supported buildings was substantially reduced where the dunes survived. The most important factor in determining the success of the dune was not planting or sand fence but distance from the ocean. Too close and the dune was flattened. Those placed farther landward were much more likely to protect adjacent roads and buildings. Property owners that left most of the earlier overwash sand in place had less new sand and less building damage than those that excavated the entire lot to the pre -storm elevations. In some cases leaving the sand in place prevented any affects in the later storms. Rebuilding dunes as far landward as possible is strongly recommended. It is recommended that the excavation of over -wash sand be minimized to the extent feasible in order to reduce damage in the future storms. Advice on locating replacement dunes is available for communities and individual homeowners is available from Sea Grant at the above numbers. *Coastal and Native Plant Specialties, Inc. 5951 Oglesby Road Milton, FL 32570 (803)626-8599 E-mail: SarraceiiiaO-aol.com *Florida Environmental, Inc. 18505 Paulson Drive, Bld.
