WE, THE UNDERSIGNED do petition Carteret County to fund the jettying and dredging
of Glover Creek for the benefit of the Sea Level and Atlantic residents,
For many years the mouth of the creek was kept open by the installation of a steel
bulkhead. After a number of years, the sand moved around and over the bulkhead to
close the mouth of the creek where only a trickle of water would flow. Until recently,
maintenance dredging was funded by the county just prior to an impending storm.
Residents and other fishing boat owners have used the creek for safe harbor and general
access for over sixty (60) years.
We believe many resident and boat owners would benefit from this proposal for general
use as well as commercial. The salinity and cleanliness of the water would also improve
and would aid in shrimp hatching and oyster growth.
Even though a longer groin would be the ultimate solution we believe that the twenty-five
(25) ft_ groin and dredging could be accomplished much more expediently and would be
sufficient for several years.
We are requesting the county to fund the above mentioned project as it has in years past.
If the county will agree to fund the jettying and the excavator dredging, the residents will
obtain proper permits from CAMA
Mr. John Fulcher has agreed to allow the equipment access and the spoil to be placed on
his property on the southwest side of the creek A jetty permit has already been obtained
to extend from the existing bulkhead and project twenty-five (25) feet into the sound.
Mr. Fulcher has also agreed to keep the spoil from re-entering the entrance from his
property by constructing silt barriers, etc. We have estimates of approximately twelve
thousand dollars ($12,000) to finance the entire project.
Please consider this proposal and give us an answer in a timely manner.
