The salt marshes of Broad Creek are scientifically highly important, because we have carried out research on marine fungi living on these marsh plants for over 30 years (see letter of the Director of UNC Institute of Marine Sciences). Broad Creek, especially its western prong, is the type locality (i.e. of vital scientific importance, not existing anywhere in N.C.) for 46 fungal species, new to science and described by us in the last 12 years. For these reasons we are greatly concerned and alarmed about any possible disturbances (docks, pilings, motor boat traffic etc) that might affect these marshes. The owners of t1-fe Thomas Gibl`in property assured- us, that the dock would be strictly used r launching canoes. If that were the case, there would be no need for the pier to the mouth of the branch and to protrude so far out into the creek (even farther than the Lawrence pier)! Also why would the dock need to be 5' above the MLW line? This looks highly suspicious to us to say the least. What about speedboats and jet skies? With 12 houses on the property, using this type of watercraft would be disastrous for the surrounding marshes because of erosion problems, oil and gas leakage (there is already enough traffic), but also because this is the breeding ground for fishes and crabs. So who is going to reinforce in the future that the dock will be used only for launching canoes? Will there be a stipulation in the final permit? And last but not least, who would be responsible for the maintenance of the dock? A dock of this size and height is greatly endangered in a hurricane and consequently poses even more risks to the surrounding marsh. In summary, for the above reasons we totally oppose the construction of a pier as proposed in the plans! We would agree to a pier that ends near the mouth of the branch (without crossing it). This would leave ample space for the launching of canoes... allegedly Mr. Giblin's and Mr. Cottrell's intention. Sincerely, VAIIA Dr. Jan Kohlmeyer Cc. For decades the marsh in this area has been the field laboratory for a wealth of scientific research on marine fungi by Drs. Jan and Brigitte Kohlmeyer of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Sciences. Through their work the Kohlmeyers have documented nearly 50 new species of marine fungi in this marsh making it the single richest archival site for marine fungi in the world. In recent years there has been a strong resurgence in scientific research on fungi to assess the potential value of chemical compounds they contain as anti -cancer agents and as active ingredients in other medicines. Because it is the archive site for these species, future harvesting, for medical or other purposes, of any of these fungi is reliant on this particular marsh remaining intact and in near pristine condition. It is my belief that the planned residential development (runoff, septic tanks, pets, people) and the recreational water usage that accompanies it (pier, boats, jet skies, etc) pose a significant threat to this marsh. The scientific and societal importance of this marsh is great. It is therefore critical that any development of this area be done in such a way that it does not significantly impact this system. Very truly yours, r uz.- L*r_c Rick Luettich Director, UNC Institute of Marine Sciences Professor of Marine Sciences and Environmental Sciences and Engineering cc Charles Jones J Kohlmeyer 'A* Drs. Jan & Brigitte Kohlmeyer 204 Henderson Drive Newport, NC 28570 Mr. Ryan Davenport NCDENR - Division of Coastal Management 400 Commerce Ave Morehead City, NC 28557 P X-i .,. JUN 1 5 2006 Morehead City c)--M June 14, 2006 Re: CAMA application by Thomas & Scott Construction to build a wood pier adjacent to our property According to the plans (see sheet #3) the proposed dock will cross coastal wetlands (composed of the marsh grasses Juncus and Spartina) and also the mouth of a branch that runs into Broad Creek. The owners of the Thomas Giblin property assured us, that the dock would be strictly used for launching canoes. If that were the case, there would be no need for the pier to cross the mouth of the branch and to protrude so far out into the creek (even farther than the Lawrence pier)! A dock of this size and height is greatly endangered in a hurricane and consequently poses even more risks to the surrounding marsh. r In summary, for the above reasons we totally oppose the construction of a pier as proposed in the plans! We would agree to a pier that ends near the mouth of the branch (without crossing it). This would leave ample space for the launching of canoes... allegedly Mr. Giblin's and Mr. Cottrell's intention. Sincerely, 4alcq- V&V Dr. Jan Kohlmeyer Cc.
