Brad, we're writing with an update —and a two-part request —concerning our dock
construction in Cedar Point (10112 Sunset Drive, Plantation Shores). As you know, the
permit for this project was issued on 10/20/2000 and expires on 1/20/2001.
Update: Chris Williams has constructed the dock and installed the boat lift. We took our
18-foot Parker down there last Saturday for a trial run_ Everything worked perfectly and
looked great. The dock/lift serves the purpose well and fits into the environment, in part
because it is appropriately scaled_ The construction impact on the marsh growth was
minimal and the grass is already reestablishing itself even under the walkway. We spoke
with several of our neighbors, all of whom liked the results a lot_ We're pleased and
hope you will be too.
Request(s): The one thing Chris has not done yet is put the roof over the boat lift. To do
this he (and we) would like a 30-day extension to the permit. He says it won't take this
long, but 30 days would allow for bad weather_ One other issue is the size of the roofed
area itself, On the permit you indicated that the covered boat house would be 12.5' x
12.5'. However, these are the dimensions of the lift only; they don't accommodate the
boat, which is 18', 2" long (not including the outboard motor). We'd like to make the
covered area 14' wide by 22' long_ This size would cover the boat lift and boat with just
a few inches overhang on the sides and ends. It would not extend beyond the dock or
finger pier, and it would still be under the 400 square foot limit in the CAMA guidelines.
The roof would rest on three poles on each side of the lift, as indicated in the attached
drawing by Chris Williams, Construction details are trusses on 2' centers, 1x6 stripping,
and a metal roof similar to the several others in the neighborhood. If we need to secure a
new permit, that's fine. I'd like not to bother the neighbors again, though, since they've
all signed off on the dock and boathouse and I'm sure they assumed the boathouse would
cover the boat.
Chris is re4dy for you to 'inspect his work either now or after the boathouse goes up (or
now and then, if you wish)_ Also, if you have any questions for him, he can be reached at
910-326-4423. Our home phone/fax number is at the top of this page.
Happy new year. Thanks for your helpful, conscientious work,
