It is wider than some rivers and it is used for fishing and boating. This canal surrounds 2 islands before reaching the Albemarle Sound. In recent years we have had problems with Duck Weed and Hydrilla. These weeds grow thick enough to stop a boat in the water. Members of the community volunteer there time to treat these weed problems by boat. These problems worsen with decreased boat traffic and therefore lack of treatment. The new proposal allows 2-3 feet of clearance under the bridge which is even less than the small amount existing now. The elevation of the road on each side of the bridge is considerably higher than the bridge and can allow improved clearance rather than less clearance below the bridge. When my home was appraised, one of the considerations of that appraisal was the amount of clearance under the bridge. Decreasing the clearance to 2 or 3 feet will drop the appraisal values of all the residential properties on the canal east of the bridge. It will interfere with boating, fishing and hinder canal maintenance relating to tree blockage and the control of the weeds mentioned above. I strongly suggest increasing the water way clearance under the proposed bridge to at least 5 or 6 feet so that small boats can continue to travel there. More would be better. Please consider this in your design and thank you for your time in this mater.
