At the property owner's request, I met Eric Ellis onsite the pier project in Marshallberg. Not the one at the "point". I was surprised that there was marsh along much of the shoreline with the exception of an area around the ramp. If the property owner had asked for a pier to be located along the east side of his property, the pier length measurement would begin at the waterward edge of the property, not at the base of the rock rip rap. Therefore, it seems appropriate to me to take an average of the marsh along the shoreline or take an extrapolated line. With an approximate 100' of shoreline, the marsh measures some 43' in width along the east side of the property, the east -center at 30', the west -center at 0' and the west at 30'. The average marsh width is approximately 25. Therefore, I would ask that we write a permit for the pier to be 137' as measured from a point 25' from the base of the rock. The 137' plus the 25' creates a 162' long -structure as measured from the base of the rock (I will put my sketch of the site on your desk). Could you call Eric and let him know. If you don't feel comfortable with this interpretation, then I can call him later this afternoon when I return. Thanks, Ted T.
