CONSTRUCTION NOTES: I. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Work in the project generally includes demolition and removal of existing timber walkway and the existing timber bulkhead, construction of a new pile supported timber walkway, construction of a new bulkhead and dredging of the basin to depth indicated. II. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS A. Regulatory requirements include but are not limited to obtaining, maintaining, displaying and complying with the following- 1 . Owner Procured: a. General CAMA Permit for construction in the AEC. Perrnit is pending approval. b. Building Permit issued by Town of Morehead City. 2. Contractor Procured at His Expense: a. Current business license. b. Current General Contractor's License for operation in the State of North Carolina. c. Permit for hauling waste and disposal as required. d. Fire, hazardous waste, safety and OSHA Standards and regulations. e. Permit to exceed load limits on certain bridges if they are on haul routes and have 'ow load limits. f. Sedimentation and Erosion Control Permits for offsite borrow and/or disposal areas III. DEMOLITION AND REMOVAL A. V%.Ioi k included: Demolition and removal of timber docks and miscellaneous items to make room for permanent construction work B. Conduct all operations in a manner that will prevent materials and debris from being deposited in the water. C. Removed materials shall become shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be disposed of off the construction site in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal codes, regulations and ordinances. D. Payment of fees for disposal in disposal areas shall be the responsibility of the Contractor. F. In the company of Owner, visit the site and verify the extent and location of the selective demolition required. G. In the event of demolition of items not designated to be demolished, the Contractor shall promptly replace such items to the approval of the Owner and at no additional cost to the Owner. IV. EARTHWORK A. General 1. Protection of Underground Utilities: The contractor shall verify locations of existing utilities prior to excavation. If utilities are to remain in place, provide adequate means of support and protection during earthwork operations. Should uncharted, or incorrectly charted, piping or other utilities be encountered during excavation, consult with the Owner. Repair damaged utilities to original condition or better. 2. Sedimentation and Erosion Control: Upland disposal site shall be identifiied by contractor and if the disturbed area is greater than 1 acre the contractor must have an approved erosion control plan. No additional payment will be made for placement of erosion control measures required. Contractor shall include these costs in the base bid. V. PILE DRIVING, MARINE TIMBER PILES FOR DOCK CONSTRUCTION A. WORK INCLUDED: Install all round timber piles indicated on the drawings by driving. B. MATERIALS: Provide new Southern Pine friction cleaned peeled piles conforming to ASTM D25. Minimum butt or tip circumferences and length as indicated. Furnish length and number of piles as indicated on the drawings. Piles must be one piece. Splices will not be permitted. C. PRESERVATIVE TREATMENT: a. Treat all piles for in water installation with preservative treatment conforming to AWPA C18. Preservative shall be chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to a minimum retention of 2.5 pounds per cubic foot. Retention for walkway bearing piles shall be 0.6 pounds per cubic foot. D. Treatment of Field Cuts: Field cuts and holes shall be treated in accordance with AWPA M-4. Pile cutoffs of dock piles shall be treated three times after edge routing and cutoffs are completed. E. Installation 1. Bearing Piles: Fixed timber pier piles shall be driven to tip elevations indicated on the drawings. 2. Jetting of Piles: Jetting of piles will be permitted with the last three feet of penetration achieve by either vibratory or impact driving. 3. Splices: Splicing of piles is not permitted for timber piling. 4. Pile Cut Off: Cut off piles with a smooth level cut, sawing at the elevations indicated on the plans. D CARTERET VI. VINYL BULKHEAD C-1 -,N"R n(� -,N r - COUNTY A. Vinyl Sheet Piling Sheet pile profile shall be manufactured with an interlocking feature that ensures adjacent panels maintain alignment. The sheeting shall be homogeneous, uniform in color, free from visible cracks, and free from other injurious defects. Manufacturer's extrusion facility shall have at least 4 years experience with the manufacturing of Vinyl Sheet Piling and 15 years experience with the manufacturing of other PVC parts. Acceptable products for use on this project are as follows: 1. Tidewall TW40 Vinyl Sheeting 4,140 ft- lbs./ft or approved equal. B. HANDLING AND STORAGE: Transportation, site handling, shi.fll be performed with acceptable equipment and methods, and by qualified personnel. Handing and storage shall be in accordance with the published manufacturers instructions. C. Timber products: Timber shall be S4S Southern Yellow Pine of the nominal sizes indicated and with the following grade and treatment. 1. Grade - No. 2(min.) 2. CCA Pressure Treatment- 0.8 PCF as per AWPA C2 & C18 D. Installation: 1. Installation shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's rec,,:)mmend ations. 2. Installation of vinyl sheetpiles shall be performed by a compe"ent piling contractor having at least five years experience with similar type :_1tn,irt1ures and materials. Members shall be lifted by means of suitable lifting devices at points provided by the manufacturer. Temporary shoring and bracing, if necessary, shall comply with manufacturer's recommendations. Piles shall be driven or vibrated into place. Jetting of piles is permitted with the last three feet of penetration achieved by driving. Jetting shall not be used if driving through clay or immediately adjacent to an existing structure without the written approval from the Engineer. 3. Installation shall be accomplished using a fixed driving guide. Guide shall fix top and bottom of sheetpile during installation. Use of a string line guide shall not be an adequate means of guiding the pile into position. 4. Drive sheet piling(preferably in pairs) to required depth and lag leading sheet to wale. Mandrel or helmet may be required if driving through hard soil strata. It is very important that contractor drive sheets to required embedment depth. Under no circumstances shall the contractor cut-off or install shorter sheets without written authorization from engineer or the owner. Sheet piling shall not be driven more than 1/2-inch per foot out of plumb in the plane of the wall, nor more than 1/1 6-inch per foot "out" of plumb perpendicular to the plane of the wall, nor more than 1-inch per foot "in" of plumb perpendicular to the plane of the wall. 5. Deformed or damaged sheetpiles shall not be used and shall be removed from the site. Deformed or damaged sheetpiles shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be replaced by the Contractor at no additional expense to the Owner. VII. TIMBER CONSTRUCTION: A. MATERIALS: 1. Timber: Stress rated southern pine, grade No. 2 minimum. Treatment for deck, stringer and bent cap members shall be treated with CCA in accordance with AWPA C18, 0.8 PCF for saltwater splash. Treatment for cross bracing and timber piles shall be CCA at 2.5 PCF for saltwater immersion. All dimension timber shall be S4S. 2. Structural Steel and Hardware: a. Steel Shapes: ASTM A36 steel b. Bolts, rods and miscellaneous Hardware: ASTM A307 steel hot dip galvanized. B. INSTALLATION: 1. FRAMING: Accurately cut and frame all timber in such a man,ier that the joints will have a close fit of the entire contact surfaces. No shimming will be permitted in making joints, nor will open joints be accepted. 2. FASTENING, Washers of the size and type specified shall be used under all bolt heads and nuts which would otherwise come in contact with wood. All bolts shall have sufficient additional threading to provide at least 3/8 inch per foot thickness of timber for future tightening. 3. NAILING: Secure all newly installed decking with 16d galvanized nails to each stringer. Provide 2 nails at each stringer for 2 x 6 deck boards. No power nailing of deck boards will be permitted. 4. FIELD TREATMENT: a. Timber Work: Field treat all cuts in treated timbers or pies and all abrasions in accordance with AWPA M4, trim all cuts and abrasions before field treatment. Paint all depressions or openings including bolt holes, joints or daps, including recesses with preservative treatment solution. Exposed ends of timber piles shall be field treated three times after cutoff and milling is completed. b. Galvanized Surfaces: Zinc coating which has been damaged to the extent that base metal is exposed, shall be repaired and recoated. Thoroughly clean the damaged area by wire brushing and remove all traces of welding flux and loose or cracked zinc coating prior to painting. Paint cleaned surfaces with two coats of Zinc -oxide Zinc dust paint, ZRC cold galvanizing compounds or approved equal.
