To whom it may concern:
We object to Harry Thompson's plan to place rocks on the east side of the
drainage ditch that separates Somerset Plantation and Barnesfield subdivisions. We object
to his plan to put rocks only on the east side of the ditch. If one side of the ditch is
protected, both sides of the ditch must be protected. The placement of rocks on the east
side of the ditch would redirect the eroding pressure of run off water against the west
ditch bank and would further erode the Barnesfield property.
The plan that Mr. Thompson proposes indicates there is an 11-13 foot wide ditch
separating his property from the Barnesfield Homeowner's property. This is not the case!
The only place the ditch is 11-13 feet wide is where it dumps into Bogue Sound, and it is
apparent that it is wider at this point because of the erosion of the Barnesfield property
due to the Thompson's existing sea wall forcing water to bear on the west ditch bank.
Mr. Thompson has been told that Barnesfield is sympathetic to his erosion problem
and that a fair plan could be accepted. A fair plan would be for the same rock and fabric
solution to be applied to both the east and west sides of the drainage ditch or to leave the
ditch as it is.
Mr. Thompson incorrectly referred to the strip of Barnesfield property on the west
side of the ditch as an easement. The Barnesfield Property Owners' Association actually
owns this land as a community access to the sound. It is not simply an easement!
The Thompson Plan in its present form should not be permitted due to the fact that
it will cause harm to the Barnesfield property.
