Directions: Dupont Company- Fayetteville Works is located on NC Highway 87 in Bladen County. From
FRO,take Highway 87 south. The entrance to the facility is approximately 18 miles from FRO on the left side
of Highway 87 just before the Cumberl and/B laden County line.
Summary of investigation: On 02/03/12 at 6:15 PM,James Daniels of DuPont called the NRC to report a 3 lb
release of methylene chloride(NRC report#1002116). No fire was reported, no injuries, and no personnel
evacuation occurred.
On 02/10/12 Greg Reeves of FRO spoke with Mike Johnson of DuPont. Mr. Johnson indicated that DuPont
conducted a follow-up investigation and determined that the total amount of methylene chloride released was
approximately 17 lbs(reportable quantity 1,000 lbs). Therefore, no report was required.
The NRC report lists the chemical released as"Methyl Chloride", when in fact the chemical was Methylene
Chloride. DuPont does not have any methyl chloride on site.
The release did not exceed reporting thresholds, and therefore a report was not required. The methylene
chloride release does not exceed the emission limits set forth in the facility's Title V air permit, and therefore no
report was required under the permit requirements.
Investigation completed 02/10/2012

FYI,
DuPont reported a second release of Methyl Chloride last Friday. According to the NRC
report, the incident resulted in the release of 3 lbs from a leaking pipe. Because this
quantity is well below the reporting TQ per EPCRA, I am not pursuing this matter further.
Please let me know if you have questions.
