Comments: Brick production for 2018 was up 2.496 percent from the brick production in 2017. Emission factors for
hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, and total fluorides have been corrected to reflect the SSCB approved test results for the
Kiln 4 test that took place on September 24,2015 that established the site specific emission factors for these pollutants. Kiln 4
was the only kiln that operated in CY 2018.

Brick Processing System-Cape Fear
— AERO: G-66 _
Description: After the wet clay is formed and coated it passes through the brick dryer and the kiln. The kiln is
sawdust fired. Combustion products and heat generated by the kiln are vented to the drum dryer
which dries the sawdust. From the drum dryer the exhaust is vented to the atmosphere. However, not
all of the heat from the kiln is vented to the wood dryer. Instead, some evaporative heat is routed to
the brick dryers and vented to atmosphere.
Approach: The AP42 Section 11.3 is used to estimate the emissions from these emission units, except for
fluoride and hydrogen fluoride factors developed from a GSB test at Moncure.

* Due to the lack of emission factors for this type of operation, the industrial sand
dryer emission factor from AP-42,Section 11.19 was selected for use. It is felt that
this is a conservative factor because the factor is for mined quartzite that is
processed into sand, which is normally a dirtier operation than is conducted for
coatings at brick plants.
