Hopkins, Arni From: Brian Conner[Brian.Conner@Avocainc.com] Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2011 9:59 AM To: Hopkins, Arni Subject: Avoca AERO Questions Hey Arni, I had a message from you asking about the 2009 vs. 2010 n-hexane and Methanol emissions in Avoca's AERO report. In 2009 we ran the rotocel and recovery operations(sage harvest)for 67 days. In 2010 we ran the rotocel and recovery (sage harvest) for 39 days. The rotocel and recovery process uses hexane solvent that contains less than 1% n-hexane. Methanol is used in the recovery process. The decrease in methanol during 2010 form 2009 is due to the fewer days of operation in 2010. However we show an increase in the n-hexane emissions for 2010 vs. 2009.The increase in n-hexane emissions is due to the increase in the amount of further processing that occurs with the sage material in the other processes (SFG/Recrystallization and Sclareolide). The lag in the next steps in the process after the original rotocel and recovery operations can take several months to occur. Therefore much of the sage that was originally processed in the rotocel and recovery in 2009 was not further processes until 2010 in SFG and Sclareolide. SFG uses the 90% n-hexane and Sclareolide uses 32% n-hexane so n-hexane emissions will be higher with these processes than with the rotocel and recovery. SFG ran for 125 days in 2009 and 308 days in 2010.Sclareolide ran for 107 days in 2009 and 258 days in 2010. This explains the major increase in n-hexane emissions in 2010 over 2009. If you have any more questions or need more information on this, please feel free to contact me. Thanks. Thanks.
