Mitigation Site tree planting Mason, Please see the email below. Also: Approximately March 2015: All Type 2 species were planted at the mitigation site, but some were planted outside of the planting window (Green Ash and Baldcypress). The contractor agreed to accept responsibility for those planted outside the window. December 2015: A review of the mitigation site at a ride through, and monitoring by NCDOT, concluded that the site should be replanted at 680 trees/acre based on how many did not survive 1 from the original planting. With the exception of Tulip Poplar, the replanting species would reflect 25% each of the other 4 species. March 2016: All agencies concurred in email that it was OK to revise the mitigation plan to delete the live staking requirement of silky dogwood and black willow (both Type 1 species) at the mitigation site due to the fact that the northern bank (of Little Northeast Creek) was already stabilized. March 3 and March 7, 2016 Per email from Daniel Waugh, the contractor completed the Type 2 planting at the mitigation site (see note under December 2015 for composition). Mitigation Site tree planting All, I wanted to update everyone on what I understand about the tree planting of the mitigation site on the U-3810 Piney Green Rd Project. Per Daniel Waugh, Tulip Poplar, Blackgum, and Water Tupelo were planted within the correct timeframe (I believe on 3/9/2015). Originally the contractor had been unable to plant the others within the planting window. However, the contractor was able to obtain all of the species and has planted the remainder (per the composition noted in the plans) even though the later planting was outside of the planting window (these were the Black Willow, Silky Dogwood, Green Ash, and Baldcypress). Daniel Waugh has been aware of the timeframes and had explained to the contractor that they would not be paid for the species that were planted late until we can tell that they have survived. The contractor decided to plant 2 anyway with the understanding that they may not be paid and may have to replace the trees that do not survive. There had been some discussion and concern regarding the survival of the Green Ash and Tulip Poplar at the site. However, at this time, we are not proposing to change the species composition. After discussing with Daniel, we will monitor the plantings through the summer months and then discuss the survival in the fall. Please let me know if you have any comments or corrections.
