The email from the Corps confirming these are isolated is attached. The primary purpose of this site visit is to confirm the NCWAM wetland type(s) and most importantly whether or not these wetlands are "Basin Wetlands". With that in mind, I looked at the mapping (USGS, NWI, soils, GIS, aerials, etc.) there are no Carolina Bays. These are obviously not mafic depressions or bogs. So, that really leaves a fringe wetland around small open waters (< 20 acres). There aren't any open waters. So, I'd be surprised to see the wetlands key out as this type of basin wetland. I'd expect them to key out to either pine flat or hardwood flat wetland types. It's possible I guess that they could also be headwater wetlands that have been cut off at some point long ago to a tributary stream, as there are tributaries shown that are not too far from them (see attached usgs). In reality, it seems these were inadvertently created when the property was logged during wet conditions (see attached 2011 aerial of ruts) since the adjacent unlogged property at lower elevations did not meet wetland criteria. The NWI seems to indicate the area drains to the east, towards the ditch identified as 700' from the wetlands on the usgs but delineation in that direction indicate only uplands and the direction of the ditches observed onsite indicate drainage being in the opposite direction. NWI wetland classification is PFO1A= Palustrine, Forested, Broad -Leaved Deciduous. Soils are mapped as Rains, which is a typical interstream divide soil type. Non wetland areas were more like Lynchburg and Goldsboro soil series. I also attached the DWR buffer letter that addresses 7 lots, the 3 lots we are concerned with are the ones that are the most western ones. Just thought I'd share some of my initial observations.
