Chris Malone Cc:harrison@soundrivers.org Subject:Halt the ACP Dear sirs: As a member of the Neuse River Foundation and Sound Rivers, I have been a citizen ombudsman for the surface water resources in North Carolina for over 25 years. Protecting the streams, creeks, rivers, ponds, wetlands, and lakes that are held in public trust by the State is a critical responsibility for all the offices and committees whose rules and actions impact the water quality in our state. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) risks irreversibly – and negatively – degrading the water quality in literally hundreds of streams and rivers in our state. In addition, the lives of farmers, fishermen, and small-town dwellers will see no economic benefit from this project. Instead, they will see the opposite. Years after the gas stops flowing from West Virginia, the costs of maintaining and monitoring the pipeline will continue. The ACP is a boondoggle, meant only to enrich Dominion power and Duke Energy at the expense of those who can least afford it: the rural residents of North Carolina and the surface waters that are the community lifeblood for all. When our landscape is ravaged and river waters polluted, tourists will no longer view North Carolina as an idyllic destination. Rather, we will be one more paradise ruined by greed. Think of the “energy boom” in North Dakota. That boom is now bust, but the waste left behind when corporations shut down and moved out is still there. Do not be misled by the energy lobby whose only goal is the self-enrichment of their sponsors with no concern for the people and the land who will be permanently disadvantaged by the ACP.
