Dear Division of Water Resources,
Dear NCDEQ,
Let me start off:
"Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane"...
And the purpose of the Pipeline is NOT that NC or VA need more; most of it is EXPORTED, so the only "winner" is the
producers.
From pro-oil website http://oilprice.com-- "In the medium to longer term, U.S. LNG is expected to reach more markets
and send more gas overseas, as four LNG export facilities currently under construction are expected to be completed by
2021. The United States is expected to become a net exporter of natural gas on an average annual basis by 2018, driven
by declining pipeline imports, growing pipeline exports, and increasing LNG exports, the EIA said earlier this year."
We don't need the extra gas for NC and VA. It's to export it and make money for the shareholders.
And then there's the argument that natural gas is not "cleaner" than coal; it may release half the carbon emissions of
coal when burned, but may be worse overall due to methane leakage at all points in the process from drilling to its end
usage.Methane is an especially potent greenhouse gas. It's 25 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere
than carbon dioxide (coal) over a 100-year time scale. Thus it becomes exponentially worse than coal.
"Natural may be reducing CARBON DIOXIDE emissions. but it is INCREASING methane emissions exponentially, which in
the atmosphere is 25 times worse for warming of the atmosphere than CO2."
Not only this, but the chemicals such as benzene are hazardous to those the live nearby. Not to mention explosions that
can happen anywhere along the path. How many people are killed in natural gas explosions along roads or in their
homes even?
I urgently hope you consider both the Atlantic and Mountain Pipelines that are proposed. There ARE alternatives, even
using the existing one we have (such as reversing flow on the Transcontinental). As as North Carolinian and having a
scientific background and education, the need for another pipeline is not warranted.
Not to mention pipelines such as these, using the largest pipes available, will break apart cohesive tracts for wildlife and
once again, they lose as well. Let's not ruin our health and our land, again for the sake of $$ (cushioned in the excuse we
"need" gas for expanding populations.
For these reasons, I urge you to reject the 401 Water Quality Certification application from Atlantic Coast Pipeline LLC.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sue Fink
