REGAN Secretory MICHAEL SCOTT Director This memorandum is to respond to your query about contamination at the Walnut Cove site. The approximately 0.6- acre dump had a waste volume of 2,958 tons that was exhumed and placed in an appropriate permitted waste facility in late spring 2016. Only municipal waste was associated with this site, no indication of ash disposal. Confirmation soil sampling was conducted in the excavated waste areas the analytical results are within natural background for the area. No residual contamination associated with Walnut Cove waste disposal remains. Attempts were made to install monitoring wells in saprolite, but the shallowest aquifer is in competent rock. We did conduct leachate testing and the material did not indicate contaminants. Documented in both public literature and through site -specific soil analysis, arsenic, iron and manganese are naturally occurring in the area of the Walnut Cove landfill. Chromium was not detected in any media sampling during our remedial investigation. There is one drinking water supply well is within 500-feet from the mitigated site located at 1184 Old Plantation Road. With permission from the property owner, our program sampled the drinking water supply well. Results from the February 2, 2017 sampling event did not detect the presence analytes above 15A NCAC 2L standards or U.S. EPA maximum contaminant levels. The second closest drinking water supply well, located at 1245 Middleton Loop Road is approximately 800-feet from the remediated site. No analytes were detected above 15A NCAC 2L standards or U.S. EPA maximum contaminant levels. Based on complete exhumation and no indications of groundwater contamination we believe this site has completed remediation.
