VAN DER VAART Secretary S. JAY ZIMMERMAN September 16, 2016 D,,ector Subject: Facility Interim Monitoring Plans and Sampling Schedules Dear Mr. Sideris: This letter is to inform Duke Energy to continue sampling per the Interim Monitoring Plans submitted as part of the Comprehensive Site Assessments for each of the 14 coal ash facilities in North Carolina. Since the Corrective Action Plans (CAPS) have not been approved by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Water Resources (DWR), Duke Energy must continue the scope of work for groundwater/surface water sampling outlined in the Interim Monitoring Plans until otherwise directed. The Effectiveness Monitoring Plans proposed in the Corrective Action Plans (Part 2) cannot be implemented until the CAPs are approved. The interim monitoring events should be conducted quarterly and will include at least a subset of the recently installed data gap wells at each facility. Direction regarding adding additional wells to the plans will be provided by the DWR Regional Offices. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Steve Lanter at (919) 807-6444.
