Supporting Documentation Received During Public meeting, f ...., DUKE ' " ENERGY 19UDEQ Ash Basin Classification Public Hearing Cummuiit Cape Fear Plant -- Maren i D, zul b inaira Everett -- Duke Energy Local District Manager Gaon Evening, Thank you for the opportunity tc provide comments and to be a part of tonighr's meeting. My name is Indira Everett ano for the last 3 yeara, 1'.e had thr. pleasure of serving as district manager fo, Duke Energy in this region. Public i,.put is a very impartant part of our work to close aah baaina acraaa the state, and sa I appr-.ciatc hearing from lUcal uiticens. At Duke Energy, we are continaii ig to deliver an our promise to safely clvac all ccal Ruh basins acrosa the Carulinaa. I" fact, we are closing basins in ways that put safety first, protect the environment, minimize impacts to communities, and manage casts. We continue to build momentum, with ash excavation undurway at several sites and comprehensive evaluation of safe clubure options at other sites. After completing comprehensive scientific and engineering 5tadia5 at the retired Cape Fear Plant, we have recommended excavating ash from the fivi aah baaina at the site and moving the material to a folly lined stractural fill at the oricRhaven Mine nut far from Cape Fear. Oar atudica noted the possible risk of flooding daring extreme weather eventa at the aita, ao we believe excavation i3 the best option to ensure long-term safe storage of the ash. An important fccu3 in ash basin closure work is making sure ail plans protect grwundwatUr. Independent exf.lrts hays verified that gruandwater near the Cape Fear Plant ash basins is flowing away from neighbors' private Vella and there continoes to be no indication that the ash basins have influenced tnem. Our process to evaluate closure cpticna i3 indeed very technical and science -based. We Have Submitted thousands of pages of data to the state, but vvc also know closing ash basins is about people and communities. Ensuring the safety of our neighbor and communities is oar top priouity. Our focus during excavation and transportation will be on minimizing impact tu the community. A3 we move through this prcess, we are also committed to keeping car naighburu informed. I continue to 3haue updates regarding the plant with the county commissioners and vvu will with neighbors a3 well thru.agh direct mailings, our company websita and through one-on-vnc opportunities to hear di,-uctly from plant neighbors and Share information. In fact, over the last year; I've spoRen with individual neighbcr tc addreas tha6 col ices ns and questions and i encourage the continuance of that transparent and upe, , dialogue. 1 ask the neighbors to please remember that I'm available throughout this prca53 to anavver any questions you may have about our work to close ash basins or other activities happening at the plant. My na,iie is Jacquie Ayala and I represent the NC Chapter of the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club has 60,000 members ant] supporters in North Carolina Who aie concerned about coal ash clear iap. ThanR you the opportunity tc apaak today. We encourage the Department of Environmental Quality to classify the Cape rear coal ash pits as high risk, in order to sn5ore that the coal ash is removed to ary, lined storage a.,,ay from the river as 5con as possible. About uz i,000 people rely on drinking ..ater intakes downstream from the coal ash pits at Doke Energy's Cape Fear sita. It's past time for Duke Enei gy to remove its coal asn to cater, Ory, lined storage at the Cape Fear plant and at all of the leaking coal asll pits across North Carolina. Many facts suppolT a high risR classification for the Cape Fear plant. Becao5a the coal ash pits at Cape Fear will likely cause aiyniflcant economic loss, environmental damage, and damage to infnaatraut.ru in the event of failure, Cape Fear is rated High Hazard an0 in Poor Condition by the EPA. And, the dam at Cape Fear is cracked. Farlller, Duke Energy has pleaded guilty to coal ash crimes at Cape Fear. Finally, we Rnow that boron, selenium, and uthGr harmful pollutants have been foana in groundwater multiple timaa above state 5tandard5 near the Cape Fear coal ash pits. For example, boron -Which is a55uciatw-d With reproductive problems and gastrointestinal illness has been detected at levels 321 % above the state stamara. We can all agree that groundwater is a preciona resu.rve. Duke Energy's a, going contamination from coal ash pits is illegal and irre5ponaibli-=. It i5 good to See that after all these decades, Doke Energy ..ill finally be held accountable and be required to clean up its mess - but DEu should require fall clean op at all coal ash Sites. Moving coal ash to dry lined stcrge away from waterways is the best solution to protect our community and families. I hope that DEu and Goven or McCrory recognize that all of North Carolina'a communities with coal ash pits deserve the same level of protection. Thank you.
