Spangler Environmental and Special Projects Manager Piedmont Tri ad Regional Water Authority Wilmington Building, Suite 207 2216 West Meadowview Road Greensboro, NC 27407-3480 Re: Randleman Lake Compensatory Mitigation Dear Ms. Spangler: On June 3, 1998 Ron Linville and myself met with you and others to look for additional compensatory wetland mitigation sites for the Randleman Lake project. We looked at 10 potential mitigation sites throughout the proposed lake watershed. It is evident from our search that the potential mitigation sites are getting smaller, probably in the 5-10 acre size, but there are additional sites out there. Of the sites we looked at on June 3, the upper Hickory Creek, Mile Branch, Kersey Valley, Cray Drive (Muddy Creek), Butke Diary, Commonwealth Road, and the Wall Brothers Road sites would appear to have wetland mitigation potential. There are also additional sites that I identified on USGS topo quads along Hickory Creek, Muddy Creek, and Bob Branch that may prove to be potential mitigation sites as well. The Oakdale site does not appear to have wetland mitigation potential. The NC 62, lower Muddy Creek, and upper Richland Creek sites that we visited appear to limited potential as mitigation sites because of small size and depth of channels As we discussed on site, the Division would support any joint efforts between the authority and the NC Department of Transportation to restore floodplain segments including stream reaches and adjacent wetland creation. It is my recommendation that the Authority pursue the potential mitigation sites identified above to achieve the 120' acres of compensatory wetland mitigation required by the 401 WQC program. DWQ staff are available to review the any additional mitigation plans or sites. Should you have any questions or wish to discuss additional mitigation sites please contact Ron Linville at 910-395-771-4600 or myself at 919-733-1786.
