Mr. Shaver:
As you are aware, the Department has monitored the Piney Green Road wetland mitigation site
since construction was completed in March of 2015. Located in Onslow county adjacent to SR
1406 Piney Green Road, the consists of 1.05 acres of riparian wetland restoration (including 0.91
ac. of riverine swamp restoration and 0.14 ac. of non-tidal freshwater marsh) and 7.87 acres of
riparian wetland preservation. According to permit conditions, NCDOT was required to monitor
the Piney Green Road wetland mitigation site for five years or until success criteria were met,
with vegetation monitoring conducted each year. Hydrologic monitoring was not required for
this project.
During the monitoring period, annual monitoring reports were submitted to the appropriate
regulatory agencies via the Environmental Analysis Unit (EAU)website:

After five years of vegetation monitoring, the Piney Green Road wetland mitigation site indicates
that the planted vegetation is surviving. Individual annual monitoring data is provided within the
monitoring reports available on EAU's website between 2016 and 2020.

During the 2020 NCDOT annual monitoring meeting it was determined that the site success
criteria had been met and that no further monitoring would be required. NCDOT requests that
the appropriate resource agencies provide documentation stating that no further monitoring is
