Mr Williams
As you are aware, the Department has monitored the Michael's Branch Stream Mitigation Site
since its construction in December of 2003 Located in Alamance County, adjacent to University
Drive off 140, this site provides 780 linear feet of stream mitigation for impacts associated with
the U -3110A project The stream relocation was revegetated with bottomland hardwood species
and the streambanks must be considered stable at the end of the two year monitoring period Per
permit requirements NCDOT was required to quarterly monitor the Michael s Branch Stream
Mitigation Site by visual observation for two years or until success criteria were met hydrologic
monitoring was not required for this project During the monitoring period quarterly monitoring
reports were submitted to the appropriate regulatory agencies via the Natural Environment Unit s
(NEU) website
http / /W-wW ncdot org/ doh/ preconstruct /pe/neu/Monitoring/Monito7 ingReports html
After two years of quarterly vegetation monitoring, the Michael s Branch Stream Mitigation Site
indicates that the planted vegetation is surviving and the streambanks remain very stable at this
time Individual quarterly monitoring data is provided within the annual monitoring reports
available on NEU s website for 2005 2007 Channel stability monitoring will continue at the site
for two additional years in accordance with the Division of Water Quality permit conditions
NCDOT requests that the Army Corps of Engineers provide written documentation stating that
further monitoring is not required and that the site is closed If you have any questions about this
project, please contact Mr Randy Griffin at (919) 715 1425
