Herbert Turner, Jr., PE (Florence & Hutcheson) Randy Boyd, PE (NCDOT Hydraulics Unit) ROADWAY DESCRIPTION The project consists of construction of a new 80 feet long 21" cored slab bridge to replace the existing 5?' feet long bridge #205 on SR 1428 over Little Blue Creek, The total' project length is 0.097 miles. The project is located in the Roanoke River Basin: The project drainage system consists of grass shoulders, grated inlets with associated pipes and rip rap pad at the pipe outfall. Jurisdictional Streams:. Little Blue Creek ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTION The project is located within the Roanoke River Basin in Granville County. The stream is classified as Class C. There are no wetlands in the project area. Storm water impacts to the stream have been minimized by utilizing sheet flow on grass shoulders along the roadway, and by draining bridge storm water to existing grassed ditch/swale to provide approximately 60' of flow before entering the stream. The existing drainage patterns have been maintained with the hydraulic design of the project BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND MAJOR STRUCTURES The primary goal of Best Management Practices (BMPs) is to prevent degradation of the states surface waters by the location, construction and operation of the highway system. The BMPs are activities, practices and procedures taken to prevent or reduce stormwater pollution. The BMP measures used on this project to reduce stormwater impacts are: Sheet flow on grass shoulders along the roadway This will promote infiltration and filtration of pavement runoff by directing sheet flow over grassed shoulder slopes. Stormwater outlet to grassed ditch/swale Bridge storm water will be drained to existing grassed ditch/swale at 13+18 LT to provide approximately 60' of flow before entering the stream. This will promote infiltration and filtration of pavement runoff over grassed lining along existing ditch/swale. No deck drains This will avoid direct discharge of storm water from the bridge deck into the receiving water. Bank stabilization Bank stabilization with class If rip rap is provided at both sides of the stream at 13+70 & 13+85 to provide long-term bank stability to prevent erosion. This will provide a stable stream and the stream will not degrade in the evolution process. NCDOT BMP to dewater NCDOT standard stormwater BMP will be used along both stream banks to dewater and isolate adjacent work area in order to remove existing concrete footers in the dry. m E c O1 O N O ?
