North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace the existing 17'6, 1@17'0, 1@17'6 span timber bridge identified as Orange County Bridge # 200 with a ?5', 1 @30', 1 @25' cored slab bridge. The existing bridge measures 52' X 20'. The proposed ge will measure 80' X 38'. Dimensions are being increased to facilitate increased traffic safety avoidance of bent placement within the stream channel. Surface water impacts have been ded by constructing a 1@25', 1@30', 1 @25' cored slab bridge instead of the 2@40' cored slab inally recommended by hydraulics. Construction of the latter bridge would have resulted in ement of a bent within the stream channel. additional fill (temporary or permanent) will be placed in Stroud Creek as a result of the posed activity. Install sheet pile cofferdam (not Ip &truct the normal streasxa 9jw and construct one pier pile encasement. 3 . Excavate slope, place filter fabric and Glass "H" Flip Rap for one abutment, 4. Move equipment and repeat steps 2 and 3 for second encasement and abutment. 5. Drive piles and construct both abutment caps. b. Set pre-stressed bridge and construct approach slabs. 7. Pave structure and install approach rails. 9. All de-watering will be into a 15` x 15' Dirt Bag. 9. Results of a Federally Listed Mussel Surveys. Dear 14r. McCartney: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace the existing 1@17' , 1@17'0, 1@17'6 span timber bridge identified as Orange County Bridge # 200 with a 1@25', 1@30' 1@25' cored slab bridge. This activity will occur in a tributary to the Eno River identified as Stroud Creek. The dwarf wedge mussel (Alasmidonta heterdon) has been recorded from the Eno River in recent years. This record is based on a single valve. This letter is a request concurrence with our finding of "Is Not Likely to Adversely Effect" for activities associated with the replacement of Orange Count] Bridge # 200. Surveys were conducted by Len Smith, Tim Savidge and Logan Williams of the North Carolina Depart ent of Transportation (NCDOT) on February 7, 2001 to determine the presence /absence of dwarf wedge mussels in the vicinity of Bridge # 200. Conditions were sufficient to conduct mussels surveys. Skies were clear and water levels were no greater than three feet. No storm events had occurred within at least 2 Jdays prior to the surveys; therefore, the water was clear. Surveys were conducted by wading. logies involved visual and tactile searches using view buckets. Poor mussel habitat occurs imme ately downstream of the Bridge # 200 due to impounding from debris including railroad ties and fallen tees. A total of fourteen eastern elliptio mussels (Elliptio spp.) were observe during approximately 2.5 man-hours of survey. The superstructure of Bridge # 200 will not create any temporary fill in the creek; however, the removal of the substructure may create some disturbance in the streambed. To minimize potential impacts to dwarf wedge mussels that may occur downstream of the project site, bridge demolition and constru tion will follow Best Management Practice (BMP) guidelines for Bridge Demolition Removal and Pro ection of Surface Waters as developed by the NCDOT in coordination with the United States Army rps of Engineers, Wildlife Resource Commission, and the National Marine Fisheries Service. nformation in this letter is provided to assist you in the determination of potential impacts from the replacement of Orange County Bridge # 200. Results of the February 7, 2001 survey indicate that the dwarf wedge mussel is not present in Strouds Creek in the project vicinity. Application of NCDOT BMPs for the proposed activity should minimize negative impacts to dwarf wedge mussels that may occur in the E o River. It is anticipated that a review of the information provided will indicate that activities at Bridge 200 are "Not Likely to Adversely Effect" any dwarf wedge mussel populations that may occur in the region. Bridge Replacement with bridge on SR-1555 Scheduled to start around April 16, 2001 and complete by June 22, 2001. 1. Remove bridge. 2. Install sheet pile cofferdam (not tp q?struct the normal stress low and construct one pier pile encasement. 3. Excavate slope, place filter fabric and Glass "II" Rip Rep for one abutment, 4. Move equipment and repeat steps 2 and 3 for second encasement and abutment. 5. Drive piles and construct both abutment caps. b. Set pre-stressed bridge and construct approach slabs. 7. Pave structure and install approach rails. 8. All de-watering will be into a 15'x 15' Dirt Bag. 9. Silt fences and all seed and mulch will be installed as site conditions require. 10. Results of a Federally Listed Mussel Surveys. Dear 4r. McCartney: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace the existing 1@17' , 1@17'0, 1@17'6 span timber bridge identified as Orange County Bridge # 200 with a 1@25', 1@30' 1@25' cored slab bridge. This activity will occur in a tributary to the Eno River identified as Stroud Creek. The dwarf wedge mussel (Alasmidonta heterdon) has been recorded from the Eno River in rece it years. This record is based on a single valve. This letter is a request concurrence with our fmdin of "Is Not Likely to Adversely Effect" for activities associated with the replacement of Orange Count Bridge # 200. Surveys were conducted by Len Smith, Tim Savidge and Logan Williams of the North Carolina Depart ent of Transportation (NCDOT) on February 7, 2001 to determine the presence /absence of dwarf wedge mussels in the vicinity of Bridge # 200. Conditions were sufficient to conduct mussels surveys. Skies ere clear and water levels were no greater than three feet. No storm events had occurred within at least 2 days prior to the surveys; therefore, the water was clear. Surveys were conducted by wading. Metho ologies involved visual and tactile searches using view buckets. Poor mussel habitat occurs imme ately downstream of the Bridge # 200 due to impounding from debris including railroad ties and fallen Tees. A total of fourteen eastern elliptio mussels (Elliptio spp.) were observgd during approximately 2.5 man-hours of survey. The superstructure of Bridge # 200 will not create any temporary fill in the creek; however, the remov of the substructure may create some disturbance in the streambed. To minimize potential impact to dwarf wedge mussels that may occur downstream of the project site, bridge demolition and constru tion will follow Best Management Practice (BMP) guidelines for Bridge Demolition Removal and Pr ection of Surface Waters as developed by the NCDOT in coordination with the United States Army 4orps of Engineers, Wildlife Resource Commission, and the National Marine Fisheries Service. nformation in this letter is provided to assist you in the determination of potential impacts from the replacement of Orange County Bridge # 200. Results of the February 7, 2001 survey indicate that the dwarf edge mussel is not present in Strouds Creek in the project vicinity. Application of NCDOT BMPs r'the proposed activity should minimize negative impacts to dwarf wedge mussels that may occur in the E to River. It is anticipated that a review of the information provided will indicate that activities at Bridge 200 are "Not Likely to Adversely Effect" any dwarf wedge mussel populations that may occur in the region.
