(.2 acres) NC DOT - HATTERAS FERRY TERMINAL BIO REPORT PAGE 2 BIO REPORT NC DOT operates the ferry service from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island and maintains the associated ferry terminals. The Hatteras Ferry Terminal is located at the south end of Highway 12 in Hatteras. The terminal consists of a large bulkheaded basin with two ferry docks for loading and unloading vehicles, and a number of dolphin clusters used to moor the ferries. Water depths in the basin range from approximately -4' near the bulkhead to -10' to -12' in the center of the basin. The existing wooden basin and deteriorated and is in need or repair. NC DOT proposes to replace 665' of the existing deteriorated wooden bulkhead with a concrete bulkhead seven to thirty feet and an average of 11' landward of the wooden bulkhead. Once the concrete bulkhead is constructed, NC DOT will remove the wooden bulkhead and the material lying waterward of the concrete bulkhead. Approximately 1840 cubic yards of material will be removed by dragline and loaded into dump trucks for offsite disposal. The construction of a new bulkhead and the removal of material waterward of it will enlarge the existing ferry basin by 7315 square feet. ANTICIPATED IMPACTS No coastal wetlands will be impacted by the construction of 665' of new bulkhead around the ferry basin. The proposed alignment and the subsequent removal of material waterward of the bulkhead will enlarge the ferry basin by 7315 square feet. The removal of the old wooden bulkhead and the material waterward of the new bulkhead will cause some localized turbidity within the basin. This turbidity should be short-termed and of little consequence.
