Sue,
Thank you for the opportunity to review the document.
Preference is to obtain water from municipality. If not, then preference is to take from the Dan River because it has
highest flows in the area. If taken from the Dan, or some other surface water source, then the location and rate of
withdrawal should be reported. A need of 5.9 mgd (million gallons per day), or 9.1 cfs (cubic feet per second), is
reported in the response. The original need was reported to be 8.45 mgd in an earlier document. What is the maximum,
instantaneous pumping capacity if a surface source? Also, should report the percent of flow that the withdrawal
represents in the water body at the location during the projected time of year and in comparison to the lowest flow of
record and 7Q10. If from the Dan River, there is an active USGS gage, i.e., number 02071000.
For the discharge of water from hydrostatic testing, need to report the location of discharge and need some clarification
of the term "dewatering structure" used in the response. The discharge rate is reported to be "not to exceed 2,500
gallons/minute". This maximum rate is equal to 41 gallons/second, which could remove plant litter and contribute to
erosion if not adequate rooted vegetation and area for dissipation and infiltration is not adequate and too steep a slope
and too high existing soil moisture content.
Also, what is the fate of the slurry used for horizontal directional drilling (HDD)?
Hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Fred,
Please look at their response to my question #3 in this document. Originally their application only indicated that
hydrostatic testing water would be from municipal sources, now they have added withdrawal from the Dan
River. Please let me know what other info you might need to provide some comments tome regarding their withdrawal
proposal.
Thanks,
