PROJECT SUMMARY: The applicant proposes the placement of rip rap to stabilize the property's 950 lineal feet of shoreline. Mrs. W. A. Corbett Page 2 9. PROTECT DESCRIPTION The project site is located at 702 Airlie Road, adjacent to the north side of Bradley Creek, in Nei Hanover County. The 6.7 acre tract is part of the locally renown Airlie Gardens, known for it' beautifully landscaped azalea, camellia, and flower gardens. The applicant's property is south of th main gardens, and the highground vegetation is primarily live oaks, mature pine, and lawn grass. It i approximately 600-650 feet wide and approximately 350-590 feet in depth. There is a gravel drive o. the west side of the property which accesses the pier and continues along the shoreline returning to th house.. Along Bradley Creek, there is a border of coastal wetlands, varying between 25 feet wide in th area of the pier, to 180 feet wide in the cove at the west end of the property . The wetlands. consist of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) which transitions to high coastal marsh adjacent to th highground. This high marsh consists of sea oxeye (Borrichia frutescens), salt meadow grass (Spartin atens , sea lavender (Limonium, spp.), and occasional shrubs, marsh elder (Iva frutescens), any grounsel-bush (Bacchants halimifolia). The landward limits of the wetlands have been delineated b- State and federal field staff as shown on the attached survey. Bradley Creek is classified as SA by the NC Division of Water Quality, and is CLOSED to the harves of shellfish. The area is not a designated primary nursery area (PNA) by the NC Division of Marini Fisheries. After the severe flooding and shoreline damage during hurricane Fran, the applicant is proposing t( stabilize her property by placing rip rap stone along it's shoreline. The proposed alignment for the ril rap is well above mean high water (MHW), and landward of the wetland delineation line. There woulc be approximately 900-950 lineal feet of rip rap, 3-5 feet in height, and up to 5 feet in width, depending on the topography. There would be some areas, landward of the rip rap, where backfill and landscaping will be necessary. 10. ANTICIPATED EAPACTS The placement of the rip rap stone would disturb approximately 4750 square feet of area, landward a the wetlands, and some additional highground disturbance resulting from associated backfill an( landscaping. Rip rap shoreline stabilization is more enviro-friendly than conventional vertical woodet bulkheads, and would actually create habitat for numerous marine organisms. Submitted by: E. F. Brooks Date: 5/27/97 Office: Wilmington The following is a proposal for a shoreline stabilization for the Waddell Corbett tract located at 702 Airhe Road. Rip Rap will be placed approximately two feet high and five feet wide and will be positioned above the mean high water mark,as staked by the CAMA Representative. The purpose of the proposed project is to control erosion and flooding of the W.A.Corbett tract.
