Subject: Re: Lake Hills Dam Removal (08-1335 v2) From: <clearcreeks@clearviewcatv.net> Date: Mon, 02 Feb 2009 19:34:22 -0500 To: Eric Kulz <eric.kulz@ncmail.net> CC: canderson@pilotviewrcd.org Eric, The Individual Permit application covers the new pond and its embankment construction only. The dam removal was required by NC Land Resources, Dam Safety and was incorporated into the stream restoration project. As of this date, the dam removal is nearing completion the dam embankment has been removed, the step-pool channel through the old dam area has been constructed, We will be seeding, installing erosion control matting on the adjacent terraces, and planting the trees and shrubs over the next couple of weeks. Work as begun on that portion of the stream restoration downstream of Lake View Drive. After that section is finished we will stabilize everything and pull out until late summer to give time for the lakebed to dry out so that we can put heavy equipment on it to finish the remaining component of the restoration across the old lakebed. The final component of the project included the new pond. The design objective for the new pond was to situate the pond in one corner of the old lake, such that the pond embankment did not encroach on the restored floodplain and created wetlands. The outlet from the pond includes a small step-pool channel that will flow into one of the shallow wetland pools on the floodplain and then into the restored mainstem of Mill Creek #3. Construction of this outlet channel and tie-into the creek will require equipment accessing the portion of the floodplain across which it will be routed. It is our hope that the IP will be approved in time to allow that portion of the pond work to take place during the construction of the restored channel, floodplain and wetlands channel across the old 1 of 2 2/4/2009 8:52 AM [Fwd: Re: Lake Hills Dam Removal (08-1335 v2)] lakebed thereby avoiding the need to return later and disturbing an already stabilized area. Let me know if you have any further questions. Please confirm that none of the proposed activities will result in impacts to the stream restoration project previously permitted under DWQ WQC 3689 (DWQ approval letter dated October 28, 2008).
