Natural gas burns cleaner than coal and produces far less carbon emissions. Plus, it complements the development of renewable energy sources like wind and solar—while also making energy more affordable for North Carolinians. Natural gas pipelines are different from—and have less environmental impacts than—oil pipelines. Natural gas would not result in an oil-like “spill” into a waterbody, as some opponents suggest. Our public utilities need additional supplies of natural gas to meet the needs of millions of customers in Virginia and North Carolina. The ACP will generate cleaner energy to heat homes and power new business in our state—which means jobs and economic opportunities for North Carolina, with minimal impact to the environment. As part of the exhaustive review process, the ACP project team evaluated thousands of miles of potential routes, submitted thousands of pages of documentation, and sought feedback from countless landowners, residents and community leaders. Every consideration should be made and every precaution should be taken to preserve our 1 environment, and I believe the ACP team is doing just that. I appreciate your efforts to ensure the same, and ask that you not delay in approving the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. A copy of this letter will be sent to my local, state and federal elected officials.
