Subject: [Non-DoD Source] Tull Wooten III planting plan (bald cypress/water tupelo)
Good afternoon,
After finalizing the stream & wetland mit plan and during the review period for the nutrient and buffer plan
writing, DWR Buffer Program recommended that we remove bald cypress from our planting plan because it is
not a hardwood tree (bald cypress was on our planting plan because the bottom of the Tull Wooten III is a
mature bald cypress swamp). In reviewing this request and discussing alternatives, we also recognized that
the area where we are focusing our planting is not in the cypress swamp, but rather up on higher, dryer
ground. Therefore, we believe the best approach for the project is actually to remove bald cypress (and water
tupelo) from our entire planting plan for the site. No other changes are proposed except to readjust
percentages to compile the entire planting area.
In summary, RES would like to modify the planting list for the Tull Wooten III stream and wetland bank site to
remove bald cypress and water tupelo. This will accomplish two things:
1. it will make the stream and wetland planting plan align with the buffer and nutrient bank plan, which will
reduce confusion during monitoring and planting.
2. It will better fit the natural community that should be planted in this area, which is on higher riparian
ground and out of the cypress swamp.
Finally, RES recognized a typo on the species latin name for Black Gum. We will plant Black Gum, Nyssa
sylvatica, not Nyssa biflora on the Tull Wooten III site.
Would you mind reviewing with the IRT and providing any comments on this request? I discussed this with Erin
Davis during a recent site visit, so she at least may be anticipating this email. Please advise me if you would
like me to distribute this email to the IRT. We are seeking your approval of this change. Please see the below
proposed change.
