Dear Mr. Foster:
On November 17, 2011, the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) received an
Additional Sampling Work Plan for the above referenced site. This work plan is based on the additional assessment letter
I sent October 2010. The work plan is approved with the following additions based on current program requirements:
• A tracer gas such as helium should be used to detect leakage of ambient air into the soil vapor sample. A shroud
should be placed over the sample probe into which the tracer gas is introduced. A monitor should be placed in the
sample zone to detect the tracer gas leakage into the probe hole. Leakage should be corrected prior to sampling.
A concentrated tracer gas atmosphere should then be maintained, measured and recorded (mean concentration for
the sample period) in the shroud during the soil vapor sampling period. The tracer gas should be among the
analytes measured in the sample submitted to the laboratory. If the measured tracer gas helium in the sample is
more than 10% of the mean concentration measured in the shroud, the sample should be considered invalid as a
result of ambient air leakage into the soil vapor sample.
• Sample collection time may be less than 8 hours. Soil vapor samples may be quick, just a few minutes while the
tracer gas atmosphere surrounds the shrouds.
• Record weather conditions during sampling time for barometric pressure, wind, temperature, and precipitation.
Be advised that this approval from the Brownfields Program does not waive any applicable requirement to obtain any
necessary permits, licenses or certifications for the above listed activities nor does it waive any requirement to comply
with applicable law for such activities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 704/661-0330, or via e-
mail at carolyn.minnich@ncdenr.gov.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Minnich
