March 6, 2015 - 2 - 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND Smith+Gardner contracted with THG Geophysics Ltd. (THG) to image 4 sections totaling approximately 71 acres of the Bowman Gray Stadium (BGS) and its surrounding facilities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (Figure 1). The work scope of this geophysical investigation is to determine the boundaries of buried municipal solid waste. The Bowman Gray Stadium is located on the Winston-Salem State University Campus and is surrounded by parking lots and practice fields. The site investigation included approximately 62 acres of accessible area. 1.2 WORK SCOPE The work scope consisted of imaging the subsurface of the BGS (Figures 2-7) using electromagnetic terrain conductivity (EM) mapping techniques. A 3-dipole terrain conductivity meter that imaged to 7.2 ft below grade (ft bg), 13.8 ft bg and 22 ft bg was deployed for the survey. Thirty-six thousand records over the 62-acre area of investigation were collected with the terrain conductivity meter on March 3-4, 2015. March 6, 2015 - 3 - 2.0 ELECTROMAGNETIC TERRAIN CONDUCTIVITY 2.1 INTRODUCTION Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys have been employed for landfill investigations for over 20 years (McNeill 1980). Advantages of an electromagnetic terrain conductivity survey include: 1. Excellent resolution in conductivity; 2. No current injection problems; 3. Simple multi-layered earth calculations; 4. Easy, rapid measurements. Disadvantages of EM for exploratory investigations are few but include: 1. Limited dynamic range; 2. Setting and maintaining the instrument zero; 3. Limited vertical sounding capability. EM surveys are principally used for landfill boundary detection (Mack and Maus, 1986; McQuown et al., 1991; Rumbaugh et al., 1987; Scaife, 1990; Stenson, 1988). McNeill (1990) contends that "...EM measurements will also undoubtedly be used to assist in locating new sanitary landfills..." (p.209). 2.2 THEORY The terrain conductivity meter is used for the measurement of the electrical conductivity of subsurface soil, rock and ground water. The electrical conductivity (or its inverse, resistivity) is a function of the porosity, permeability and the fluids in the pore spaces (McNeill, 1980). In the landfill setting, the pore fluids dominate the measurement and thus the EM is an excellent tool for delineating buried waste, trench boundaries, drums and other metallic objects. The absolute values of conductivity obtained in a survey are not necessarily diagnostic but the variations in conductivity can be used to identify anomalies (Benson et al., 1988). The EM method is further useful when integrated with a data logger (GF CMD Control Unit) and Global Positioning Unit (Trimble Geo 7X) that provide for continuous measurement of the field position and terrain conductivity, thus increasing the survey size and scope while reducing costs over conventional soundings. The EM tool consists of a transmitter coil that radiates an electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field induces eddy currents in the earth that generate a secondary electromagnetic field proportional to the magnitude of the current flowing within the coil. Quadrature and in-phase components of the secondary magnetic field are captured by the receiver in the form of an output voltage that is linearly related to subsurface conductivity (McQuown et al., 1991). The quadrature phase component (terrain conductivity) is measured in milliSiemens/meter (mS/m) and provides a measurement of soil conductivity. The in-phase mode, measured in parts per thousand (ppt), is responsive to highly conductive, buried metallic objects. March 6, 2015 - 4 - The terrain conductivity value is an average conductivity of the effective depth of the survey tool. The effective depth is determined to be about 1.5 times the intercoil spacing (i.e., the distance between the receiving and the transmitting coils). The CMD Explorer (GF Instrument, Brno, CZ) is a multiple frequency tool with 3 different intercoil spacings to allow for an effective penetration depth of 7.2, 13.8, and 22 feet. The tool measures the bulk conductivity of the entire skin depth specified by the intercoil spacing. Consequently, the tool averages the response determined through the skin depth. Near-surface material has a very small contribution to the secondary magnetic field and the orientation of the dipoles in a vertical coplanar fashion is insensitive to near-surface changes in conductivity. Conductivity values of clayey-sandy soil typical of those found at the BGS are approximately 20 mS/m (Benson et al. 1988; McNeill 1980; Schutts and Nichols 1991). Fill materials have been observed to have a terrain conductivity of greater than 40 mS/m (McQuown et al., 1991; Hutchinson and Barta, 2000; Hutchinson and Barta, 2005, Hutchinson, 2006). 2.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL The interpretation of geophysically-generated data is not an exact science since the responses to induced disturbance is affected by many phenomena including buried metals, operator error, precipitation, and net changes in ground saturation conditions. Some sources of spurious data can be overcome through a QA/QC program and use of multiple geophysical methods. The quality control program employed with this study included frequent checks of the equipment and resurveys of lines and locations. The QA/QC program indicates that all geophysical equipment functioned as designed during the survey program. March 6, 2015 - 5 - 3.0 GEOPHYSICAL INTERPRETATION 3.1 INTRODUCTION EM data represent a response to the electrical conductivity of the skin depth of the tool. Several methodologies exist for presenting EM data including surface mapping and section profiling. Field data acquired for the survey were used to develop a terrain conductivity map for the BGS facility where background soil terrain conductivity is approximately 20 mS/m (Figures 2 through 7). The survey area consists of approximately 62 acres and includes practice fields and parking lots that surround the stadium. The percolation of rainwater through organic waste and the degradation of organic material generate soluble and insoluble ions. These ions provide the elevated terrain conductivity to the leachate and waste (Figure 2, 4, and 6). The in-phase terrain conductivity map is sensitive to ferrous and non-ferrous metals (Figures 3, 5, and 7). The work area was divided into 4 sections based upon maps provided by Smith+Gardner. Section 1 includes the Bowman Gray Stadium and its surrounding parking lots; Section 2 includes practice fields on the west side of the facility and is bordered to the north by a remediated stream channel; Section 3 includes an open field north of the stadium; and Section 4 includes a set of parking lots on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr Drive. 3.2 SECTION 1 Section 1 consists of approximately 26 acres of land. This Section demonstrates strong terrain conductivity in the parking lot on the south west side of the stadium. The topography of this parking lot has patterns of subsidence indicating that waste trenches are oriented in the east-west direction. Terrain conductivity was strongest trending in the northwest-southeast direction, indicating the possibility of two sets of trenches. A small subsided pit, separated from the other trenches, appears to be located on northeast edge of the lot (Figure 2). In-phase mode readings are not elevated throughout Section 1, but strong metal signatures outside of the southwest parking lot were most likely caused by underground utilities, metal fences, and parked vehicles. High values for conductivity and in-phase components suggest that these trenches are at least 20 feet deep (Figures 6 and 7). 3.3 SECTION 2 The practice fields south of the remediated stream channel in Section 2 consist of approximately 11 acres. Elevated conductivity readings exist along the southwest corner and northern edges of the area investigated and are interpreted to be caused by municipal solid waste (Figure 2). Decreased conductivity values at greater effective depths indicate that the buried waste is likely shallow (Figure 4). Extraneous high conductivity and in-phase values were caused by metallic surface structures and underground utilities. 3.4 SECTION 3 The area investigated in the open field north of the stadium consists of approximately 9 acres. March 6, 2015 - 6 - Elevated conductivity readings were present in the southwest half of the field. In addition, a culvert drain pipe leading from Section 3 is draining into the remediated stream channel and shows signs of leachate contamination. Diminishing conductivity values at increasing depths suggest the buried waste is shallow (Figure 4). 3.5 SECTION 4 The parking lot on the eastern side of BGS across Martin Luther King Jr Drive consists of 16 acres asphalt pavement and grassy fields. The eastern lot contains municipal solid waste, buried in relatively shallow trenches. The waste appears to have been placed in 4 east-west oriented trenches to a depth of between 14 and 20 feet below grade (Figure 6). March 6, 2015 - 7 - 4.0 CONCLUSION The findings and conclusions in this report are stated with a reasonable degree of scientific certainty. THG's findings and conclusions are as follows:  The Bowman Gray Stadium and surrounding fields, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is part of the Winston-Salem State University Campus with an approximately 71- acre footprint;  Approximately 62 acres were imaged with EM terrain conductivity methods on March 3-4, 2015;  The field southeast of the stadium (Section 1) contains municipal solid waste to a depth of greater than 22 ft bg;  Section 4, the parking area east of BGS, contains municipal waste in 4 trenches to a depth of between 14 and 20 ft bg;  Section 2 contains shallow waste in the west and northern sides of this Section;  Section 3 appears to have contained waste as the waste is very shallow and appears to be a remnant of what must have been there at some point in the past; and,  The remainder of the BGS and surrounding area is free of buried waste. Geophysical investigations are a non-invasive method of interpreting physical properties of the shallow earth using electrical, electromagnetic, or mechanical energy. This document contains geophysical interpretations of responses to induced or real-world phenomena. As such, the measured phenomenon may be impacted by variables not readily identified in the field that can result in a false-positive and/or false negative interpretation.
