Subject: Caroline Courtyard Brownfields Project
Submittal of Stream and Sediment Sampling Plan
North Generals Boulevard
Lincolnton, Lincoln County, North Carolina 28092
Brownfields Project No. 19001-15-55
Dear Mr. Rudder,
In accordance with regulatory requirements of the Caroline Courtyard (Project ID 19001-15-55)
Brownfields Agreement, Griffith Enterprises is submitting a surface water and sediment
sampling regime for your approval. Sampling activities will occur within Walker Branch
(Stream Index Number: 11-129-5-10), a perennial stream with a DWQ-designation of Water
Supply IV. Walker Branch borders the southern portion of the Caroline Courtyard property and
flows in an eastern to western direction. Matrices to be sampled include surface water and
stream-bed sediment (fine to coarse sand-sized particles) during a 72 hour period of no rainfall.
Other pertinent sampling information is defined below:
1.Sampling Locations – surface water and sediment samples will be collected upstream,
within, and downstream of Caroline Courtyard. Figure 1 shows the approximate
locations of proposed sample collection locations. Griffith Enterprises plans to collect
samples within crossover reaches of Walker Branch. Crossover reaches provide active
water flow for a representative sample without turbulent mixing, which may be
present in riffle stream sections.

2.Sample Analyses – surface water and sediment samples will be analyzed for EPA
Method 8260 and 8270, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, respectively,
since offsite sources released these contaminants of concern underneath the Caroline
Courtyard property. In accordance with the Caroline Courtyard Brownfields
Agreement, surface water and sediment samples will be analyzed for RCRA metals.
3.Sample Preservation – samples will be preserved in accordance with 40CFR 136.3.
Samples will be store on ice from collection to delivery at the laboratory.
4.Laboratory – samples will be analyzed at Pace Analytical Services in Huntersville,
North Carolina. Pace Analytical is a North Carolina-certified laboratory with a
certification number of 5342.
5.Ambient Conditions – samples will be collected during dry weather conditions.
Rainfall will not occur within 72 hours prior to sample collection; Griffith Enterprises
will verify dry weather conditions through the NC State Climate Office at Lincoln
County Airport (hourly rainfall gauge data) prior to sampling activities.
I hope that you find this sampling plan acceptable to you. If I have omitted any pertinent
information, please feel free to contact me at agriffith@triad.rr.com or (336)712-0290. Thank
you for your assistance and I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
M. Alan Griffith
